Best UConn women’s basketball player ever: How Paige Bueckers compares to Breanna Stewart, Diana Taurasi

By | April 3, 2025

Since winning its first national title in 1995, UConn women’s basketball has been nothing short of a dynasty.

Over 30 seasons, the Huskies have won 11 national titles and will look to make it a 12th during the 2025 Final Four in Tampa, Florida. Leading the charge for the 2025 team is senior Paige Bueckers, who looks to cap off one of the most impressive careers in school history with a national title.

Bueckers is one in a long line of Huskies greats, as the school has produced some of the best players to ever play the game. And while a title eluded her during her first three seasons on the floor, Bueckers already has a unique place among a group of seven Huskies legends who have a case for being the greatest in program history.

Who is the best UConn women’s basketball player of all time? Here is where Bueckers measures among a group headlined by Maya Moore, Breanna Stewart and Diana Taurasi.

Best UConn women’s basketball players

Of the countless greats to wear a UConn uniform, only seven players have been named National Player of the Year. When considering who is the best UConn women’s basketball player ever, the list begins and ends with those seven players.

Here is the case for each player, complete with their individual and team accomplishments.

Sue Bird (1998-2002)

  • National championships: 2
  • Career stats: 11.7 ppg, 5.0 apg, 2.8 rpg, 2.0 spg

Bird is one of the greatest winners the game has ever seen, and she brought her winning ways to Stoors, Connecticut. With Bird running point, UConn won titles during her sophomore year in 2000 and her senior year in 2002. She saved her best for last, winning multiple National Player of the Year honors during her final season.

Paige Bueckers (2020-25)

  • National championships: 0
  • Stats: 19.9 ppg, 4.7 rpg, 4.6 apg

Injuries cut Bueckers’ sophomore year short and robbed her of a junior season, and she still has one of the best college careers from a UConn player. Bueckers was named National Player of the Year as a freshman, ranks third on the school’s all-time scoring list and has the highest scoring average (19.9) in school history.

A national title would cement Bueckers’ argument to be one of the best, especially considering the setbacks she’s overcome.

Tina Charles (2006-2010)

  • National championships: 2
  • Stats: 15.4 ppg, 9.0 rpg, 1.2 apg, 2.0 bpg

Charles has two national titles and was the best college basketball player during her senior year, where she averaged 18.2 points and 9.5 rebounds per game and was named National Player of the Year. She ranks first on the school’s all-time rebounding list (1,367) and fifth in points (2,346).

Rebecca Lobo (1991-95)

  • National championships: 1
  • Stats: 16.9 ppg, 10.1 rpg, 2.1 apg, 3.1 bpg

Lobo is arguably the most important player in program history, as she is UConn’s first-ever National Player of the Year and was the Most Outstanding Player for the program’s first-ever national championship team. She ranks first all-time in rebounds per game (10.1) and is a big reason for the program’s growth into a dynasty at the turn of the century.

Maya Moore

Maya Moore (2007-2011)

  • National championships: 2
  • Stats: 19.7 ppg, 8.3 rpg, 3.5 apg, 2.0 spg

Considered by many as one of the greatest of all time, Moore won two national championships and earned National Player of the Year honors as a sophomore and senior. Moore is the only player in UConn history to score over 3,000 career points, and her 22.8 points per game in 2010-11 is the highest single-season average in school history.

Moore has one of the strongest GOAT cases among all UConn women’s basketball players.

Breanna Stewart (2012-16)

  • National championships: 4
  • Stats: 17.6 ppg, 7.8 rpg, 2.8 apg, 2.7 bpg

There’s a strong argument to make that Stewart turned in one of the greatest collegiate careers ever. Regardless of sport.

During her four years at UConn, Stewart went 4-for-4 with national titles, winning Most Outstanding Player each time. She was also named National Player of the Year thrice, winning as a sophomore, junior and senior. She’s first on the school’s all-time blocks list (414), second in scoring (2,676) and fifth in rebounds (1,179).

She also has just one more career loss (five) than she has national titles (four).

Diana Taurasi (2000-04)

  • National championships: 3
  • Stats: 15.0 ppg, 4.5 apg, 4.4 rpg

Taurasi is undeniably the WNBA’s GOAT, and she showed flashes of that potential during her time at UConn. She won a national championships in each of her last three seasons, was twice named NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player and was named the Naismith College Player of the Year as a junior and senior.

With three titles and two years of being the best player in college basketball, Taurasi’s case is one of the strongest.

Who has the most points in UConn women’s basketball history?

Despite playing in significantly fewer games than all but one other player in the top 10, Bueckers ranks third all-time on the scoring list. She moved into the top three with 31 points in an Elite Eight win over USC and has up to two more games to add to her tally.
