Bill Simmons is clearly frustrated with what happened to his fantasy football team last season. It seems like all his disappointment boils down to just one player: Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence.
During a fantasy football discussion on “The Bill Simmons Podcast” on Friday, he issued a scathing warning about Lawrence. Simmons declared him a “complete stay away” for fantasy drafts.
Simmons began by acknowledging he once had high hopes for Lawrence as a fantasy asset, saying, “He was one of my big guys last year, like big year coming.” However, his assessment quickly turned critical.
“He’s not good at football. I don’t think he’s accurate. I think he throws hospital balls left and right,” Simmons said.
Simmons didn’t stop there. He expressed concerns about Lawrence’s decision-making, especially inside the red zone. “I don’t think he’s a smart quarterback. I think he does dumb s**t especially inside the 20,” Simmons said.
He added a sharp warning:
“If I was Brian Thomas Jr.’s family, I’d be terrified every game.”
Simmons then took the opportunity to criticize the Jaguars’ overall performance last season. He recalled, “I forgot until I went through my notes, how stupid the Jaguars were last year.”
When asked which week he felt Lawrence failed the most in fantasy football last year, Simmons was blunt: “How about all the weeks, every single week?”
He compared Lawrence’s situation to a player being damaged by years on a bad team.
“It’s like gangrene,” he said. “Your leg falls off.”
It’s up to fantasy football managers whether to draft Lawrence or not, but judging by his performance last season, most will probably steer clear.
That said, with Liam Coen stepping in as the new head coach, there’s hope for a bounce-back season. Managers will need to decide carefully to avoid any regrets down the line.
