Bills QB depth chart: Why Buffalo brought back Mitchell Trubisky to be Josh Allen’s backup

By | September 12, 2024

When Tom Brady left the Patriots after the 2019 season having owned the AFC East for two decades, Josh Allen stepped up and delivered the Bills first division title in 25 years. Since then, Buffalo has been a top four playoff seed in the conference for four seasons straight.

Despite the Bills only venture past the first round coming in 2020, when they were routed by the eventual Super Bowl winning Chiefs in the AFC Championship Game, Allen has cemented himself as one of the league’s best passers throughout the last several years.

Luckily for Buffalo, their franchise quarterback hasn’t struggled with injuries much through his NFL career. Allen currently has the longest consecutive games started streak by a quarterback at 99, including the postseason—he hasn’t missed a contest since midway through his rookie year in 2018.

The only members of the Bills Mafia who won’t benefit from this positive trend are Allen’s backups, who are unlikely to play much this season if he plays as he has in the past. Here’s everything to know about Buffalo’s quarterback depth chart, including why the team brought back Mitchell Trubisky to be Allen’s secondary.

Bills QB depth chart

1. Josh Allen

Since 2020, Allen has been a top-10 passer in the league, throwing for over 4,200 yards each season. Last season, he harbored a 66.5% completion rate while throwing for 29 touchdowns and 18 interceptions—the most he’s thrown in one season so far in his career. Nevertheless, the Bills earned the No. 2 seed in the AFC and beat the Steelers handily in the Wild Card Round before losing to the Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

In his first appearance of the 2024 season against the Cardinals, the quarterback did not disappoint. Allen completed 18-of-23 passes for 232 yards and two touchdowns, good for a 137.7 rating in Week 1.

That being said, Buffalo is without its two leading receivers from last season, Stefon Diggs and Gabriel Davis, who are now with the Texans and Jaguars respectively. For Allen to repeat the Bills’ success from the last four years, he will need to continue developing connections with third-year wideout Khalil Shakir, exciting rookie Keon Coleman, and offseason signings Curtis Samuel and Mack Hollins.

2. Mitchell Trubisky

Following a two season stint with the Steelers, Mitch Trubisky is back with the Bills after spending one year with the team in 2021. The quarterback signed a 2-year deal with Buffalo in March worth $5.25 million, securing his spot as Allen’s lone backup on the official depth chart.

Trubisky started the 2022 season for Pittsburgh over the team’s first round pick Kenny Pickett. He was later benched in favor of the rookie in Week 4, starting one more game for an injured Pickett before the season came to an end. In five starts and seven games played that year, Trubisky threw for over 1,200 yards with a 65% completion rate for four touchdowns and five interceptions.

In 2023, he remained a backup until Pickett was injured in Week 13. Trubisky was subsequently named Pittsburgh’s starter for Weeks 14 and 15, but he lost both contests and was benched for Mason Rudolph. Despite signing a 2-year extension with the Steelers before the season, Trubisky was released in February 2024 before signing with the Bills just under a month later.

3. Mike White

The Bills signed Mike White to their practice squad in late August, marking his third team in six seasons. Drafted in the fifth round by the Cowboys in 2018, the same year Allen was picked by Buffalo, the quarterback has served as a backup or practice squad player his entire career.

During his initial three seasons, in which after the first he was waived by Dallas and signed to the Jets practice squad, White did not see the field. However, that changed when New York’s Zach Wilson was injured in 2021 playing the team’s Week 7 game against the Patriots and White was called on to replace him.

In White’s two seasons with New York where he saw field time, he started seven games and played in eight, throwing for just over 2,000 yards, eight touchdowns and 12 interceptions. After playing through five broken ribs in his last game as a Jet in January 2023, White signed a 2-year contract with the Dolphins. He appeared in one game for Miami before the team released him at the end of the 2024 preseason.
