Bring the Boom dance, explained: How A.J. & Big Justice inspired celebration for NFL, NBA, NCAA and more stars

By | October 23, 2024

There’s a new dance craze garnering interest among athletes young and old.

Its originator? An 11-year-old Costco enthusiast.

If you’ve been on social media at all in the past few months, you’ve likely been greeted with a familiar sight. An ebullient adolescent and his vivacious father taste-testing various parts of Costco’s much-vaunted cuisine.

Big Justice and AJ are two of the biggest figures in the land of memes. That distinction comes with a series of perks, one of which appears to be inspiring to be mimicked by large portions of the population — including sports stars.

Quinn Ewers, Jake Bates and — most recently — Tyrese Haliburton have paid homage to Big Justice and his eye-catching dance in recent games. But just where did the jig come from? And how has it turned into a sensation all its own?

The Sporting News has the answer to these and many more inquiries into the “Bring the Boom” dance. Without further ado, here’s what you need to know about Big Justice’s jig, a waltz unlike any other.

Bring the Boom dance, explained

Big Justice — the pen name of 11-year-old internet personality Eric Befumo — conjured up the Bring the Boom seemingly out of thin air, pairing the harrowing image of a person flexing on their haters with the gleeful elegance of the Rockettes.

The result? A dance that has taken social media — and, by proxy, the sports world — by storm.

Big Justice and his family are diehard Yankees fans. So it’s not too surprising that the lines between his dance floor and the playing field are a bit blurred.

After conquering the web with those eye-catching Costco appearances, Big Justice and AJ went into the booth, attempting to craft a track that laid out all that they’re about. What came out was “We Bring the Boom,” a short but sweet offering that Chopin and Bach would be proud of.

The ditty dropped in July. The dance came shortly thereafter, coaxing legions of faithful disciples to flex their biceps and kick their feet to follow their favorite content creator.

Athletes were no exception.

As of late, it seems like the whole of the sports world can’t get enough of Big Justice. Whether it’s Quinn Ewers, Jake Bates and Haliburton or the Knicks and Florida Atlantic’s football and baseball teams, plenty of sportsmen have been captivated by Big Justice’s moves.

Can you really blame them?

“We were just out there trying to have some fun,” Ewers said after performing an interpretation of the dance against Oklahoma on Oct. 14. “Shoutout Big AJ, shoutout Big Justice.”
