Cam Newton vs. Commercial Kid: Did old NFL Play 60 ad predict Newton’s Patriot fate?

The prophecy was foretold.

Many moons ago, now free-agent quarterback Cam Newton co-starred in a hilarious commercial for the NFL’s “Play 60” campaign, a league initiative urging kids to go out and play for an hour a day. The commercial lived on in the pantheon of legitimately funny commercials starring athletes — and now it’s resurfaced in the wake of Newton’s release.

New England cutting Newton sparked memories and got hamster wheels turning on Tuesday, with the commercial once again resurfacing, with some jovially identifying the Play 60 Kid as Mac Jones — the quarterback taking Newton’s place under center in New England.

Newton played opposite of a kid named “Nate” — who may or may not have been played by a young Jones — who promised to one day take Newton’s job in the NFL (and become his mom’s favorite player).

At the time of the commercial, Newton was the starter of the Panthers, meaning that whoever that kid is (maybe Kyle Allen?) might have missed the boat on making Newton his backup.

Though, the similarity of these kid getting older, bigger, stronger, taking Newton’s job and making fans forget about Cam? Kinda eerie!

Some people thought the same:

The true identity of the pasty kid may never be known. We hope he made it to the league. The next great mystery: The football world waits to see where Newton lands next.

There’s good news, though: No matter what happens, at least Newton will still be his mom’s favorite player.
