Jaime Munguia looks to show why Golden Boy Promotions heralded him the next big thing in boxing when he challenges Canelo Alvarez for the status of undisputed super welterweight champion on May 4. The fight is in the T-Mobile Arena, and it is expected to be a hot ticket.
The 27-year-old Munguia claimed super welterweight gold when he beat Sadam Ali in 2018 for the WBO title. He defended the belt against various contenders, but Munguia’s level of competition grew when he beat Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June and John Ryder in January via TKO.
Munguia believes the best is yet to come against a pound-for-pound great in Canelo. He can defy the literal and figurative odds live on Amazon Prime and DAZN.
“Canelo has always been a source of pride and motivation for me. I used to say when I was coming up in the sport that I want to be like him, and now we get a chance to face him and hopefully be where he is soon,” Munguia said.

“This is just the beginning of the best part of my career. I’ve done a lot in my career so far, but I believe I’m just reaching my peak now.
It took Canelo 11 months to unify the super middleweight division. He has steered clear of competing against other Mexican fighters, while fight fans have requested he face David Benavidez. The Munguia fight will be his first Mexico vs. Mexico showdown since beating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. in 2017.
