Daring to be great, Canelo Alvarez has taken on all comers. The undisputed super middleweight champion will go outside the norm and won’t defend the belts against someone within his division. Instead, another fighter with gold dares to be great as Jermell Charlo moves in weight to face Canelo on September 30.

The fight for the status of undisputed super middleweight champion takes place at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Canelo returned from wrist surgery in May and beat John Ryder to retain the belts. He had plenty of options for fights: David Benavidez, a Dmitry Bivol rematch, and Jermall Charlo, the brother of Jermell. Instead, Canelo elected to face Jermell, the undisputed super welterweight champion.

“I think Jermell Charlo is the perfect fight right now. He’s been calling me out for a long time, and I never forget,” Canelo said during a media workout. “He’s said a lot of things. He never believed in my skills, but he’s gonna find out soon. Him and his brother didn’t believe in my skills, and that motivates me for this fight.

“Charlo will be good at 168 pounds. I’ve made that jump before, so I know. I think that when you’re a great champion like he is, it doesn’t matter.”

Inactive since May 2022, Charlo has also been recovering from a hand injury. That setback occurred while “Iron Man” was in training to face WBO mandatory challenger Tim Tzsyu. Now, with Charlo electing to face Canelo, he will be stripped of the WBO 154-pound title, which will be on the line when Tszyu faces Brian Mendoza on October 15.

“I know Tim Tszyu was my [mandatory] challenger. But he does nothing for my career,” Charlo told Brian Custer via Boxing Scene. “He still needs to build up himself, build up his career. I’m cool with that. But I was down to fight him anyway. Then we ran into the injury, and now it’s like — we get an opportunity like this, we’re gonna go ahead and take that.”
