Canada vs. Australia score, result, highlights as Christine Sinclair’s farewell ends with win over Matildas

By | December 5, 2023

Christine Sinclair’s farewell tour has ended with Canada defeating Australia 1-0 at BC Place in Vancouver on Tuesday night (Wednesday AEDT).

The retiring superstar played nearly 60 minutes in a match that saw midfielder Quinn score the only goal just before half-time, nodding into an empty net after Kadeisha Buchanan struck the crossbar.

After a drubbing in the opening friendly, the Matildas performed better on this occasion, but still failed to get a shot on target across the game.

The Sporting News followed the Canada vs. Australia match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as it happened.

90th min: There will be four minutes of added-on time.

85th min: Only five shots for the Matildas in this match. None on target.

84th min: SHOT CANADA

Leon has pair of shots on goal. First shot is blocked, second is straight into the arms of Micah.

80th min: SUBSTITUTIONS CANADA

Collins comes on for Riviere and Zadorsky enters the fray for Rose.

80th min: What an amazing crowd here at BC Place. Over 48,000. The second most attended sporting event in Canada in 2023.

78th min: Canada have a wall set up as Australia try to break it down. It’s been an excellent defensive performance from the home side all night.

75th min: CHANCE AUSTRALIA

The Matildas’ best chance of the night. Fowler plays through Yallop after Sheridan’s poor clearance. But Yallop sprays the shot over the crossbar. What an opportunity.

70th min: SHOT AUSTRALIA

Foord has a go from long range, Sheridan looks beaten, but the shot rises over the bar. That was close.

69th min: SUBSTITUTION CANADA

Jordyn Huitema is subbed on for Nichelle Prince in the Canadian attack.

65th min: SUBSTITUTION AUSTRALIA

Tameka Yallop is brought on to replace Katrina Gorry as the Matildas look for more legs in midfield.

64th min: CHANCE CANADA

Leon plays a delicious ball across the box but Lacasse just can’t quite get there at the back post.

61st min: SUBSTITUTION CANADA

Adriana Leon comes on for goalscorer Quinn.

59th min: SUBSTITUTION CANADA

Christine Sinclair is subbed out a huge applause at BC Stadium. Sophie Schmidt, who is also retiring, comes on.

56th min: SHOT CANADA

A mix-up at the back allows Lacasse space on a tight angle. But her shot is into the body of Micah, who was perfectly positioned.

51st min: Raso springs clear down the right. She tries the inch-perfect pass to Carpenter through the middle, but the ball is too heavy. It needs to be precise from the Matildas. Canada are defending well.

50th min: There doesn’t appear to have been any substitutions by either team at the break.

48th min: Sinclair is played through on goal but Micah comes out to claim at the feet of the Canadian legend.

47th min: Cooney-Cross put in a corner that’s cleared across the goal-line by Canada but no one from Australia is there to benefit. Gorry tries a first-time cross from the far side but it’s disappointing and on to the roof of the net.

Second half: We are underway in the second period here at BC Place.

HALF TIME: Canada 1-0 Australia

A much better performance from the Matildas but Canada lead 1-0 after an Australian defensive lapse. Quinn the goalscorer from a set piece in a late Canada rally. Christine Sinclair’s farewell is tracking nicely for the home fans.

45th min: There will be two minutes of added-on time.

43rd min: DISALLOWED GOAL CANADA

Gilles heads the ball into the net but a foul is blown on Matildas goalkeeper Teagan Micah. Lucky escape for Australia there.

41st min GOAL CANADA (Quinn) Canada 1-0 Australia

From the resulting corner, Quinn heads into the empty net after Buchanan’s shot comes off the crossbar. Australia couldn’t get the ball clear. A disappointing defensive moment for Gustavsson’s team.

Watch in Canada:

40th min: CHANCE CANADA

Prince is clear down the right wing once again. She has Lacasse in the box. The cross is heading for a Lacasse tap-in but Hunt gets across to clear the corner.

39th min: CHANCE CANADA

The best chance of the match so far. Prince creates an opportunity, she gets in Fleming’s feet who looks for Lacasse but Australia gets it clear.

34th min: CHANCE AUSTRALIA

Canada are dispossessed in their box. Fowler gets on the ball but she can’t get the pass to Raso, who is free in the area. The ball goes long and Fowler puts her head in her hands.

31st min: For all of Australia’s possession, they have really struggled to break down Canada’s well-organised defence.

28th min: Catley is getting treatment. Looks like it might be a serious injury. Australia playing with 10 currently.

22nd min: SHOT AUSTRALIA

Fowler mesmerises the defender at the top of the box but her shot is wide of the right post. The Man City star looks up for this game.

18th min: Raso makes a nuisance of herself down the right and eventually earns Australia a corner. The set-piece is missed by Canada keeper Buchanan but a foul is blown before Australia can try to get the ball in the net.

17th min: CHANCE CANADA

Prince clips a shot just wide after the cutback from Lacasse. Matildas have been under pressure in the last few minutes.

15th min: SHOT CANADA

Lawrence robs Kennedy and sends Prince clear down the right. Prince comes inside and plays to Lacasse. She cuts in but shoots well over the bar. Canada working their way into the game slowly.

13th min: From the Canada, the Matildas counter-attack with pace. Carpenter is played through, she could have gone down, and she gets the cutback but Canada scramble clear just as Van Egmond is arriving. Great play from Australia.

12th min: Canada have their first dangerous attack. Prince is clear down the right channel but is corralled by Kennedy, who eventually concedes a corner.

9th min: Fowler plays Catley through to the left byline but the cross toward Van Egmond is cleared. Another dangerous foray by Australia.

7th min: SHOT AUSTRALIA

Raso is sprung clear down the right channel. Under pressure, she tries a shot on goal from just inside the box but it’s into the side-netting. A promising start by Australia.

5th min: Australia with all the early possession. A much different start to Canada’s dominance in the first friendly.

2nd min: Cagey opening. Canada don’t appear to be pressing as high as they did against the weakened Matildas lineup.

Kickoff: The action has started at BC Place … or sorry, I mean CS Place!
