T-MOBILE ARENA, LAS VEGAS — Undisputed super welterweight champion Jermell Charlo will dare to be great when he goes up two weight classes to challenge boxing’s biggest superstar, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, for the undisputed super middleweight title.
Canelo (59-2-2, 39 KOs) will look to make his third defense of the undisputed super middleweight championship. He unified all four major titles when he knocked out Caleb Plant in November 2021.
After suffering a hiccup when he fell short in attempting to gain light heavyweight gold against Dmitry Bivol, the 33-year-old superstar returned to super middleweight and successfully defended his titles against Gennadiy “GGG” Golovkin and John Ryder.
Some think that Canelo is showing signs of a decline and the Mexican is out to show that he’s still the best in the world. “People will always have something negative to say. I have to prove that I’m still on top,” Canelo said at Wednesday’s final press conference.
As for Charlo, this is the moment he has been waiting for. After becoming the undisputed super welterweight champion last May when he defeated Brian Castano, Charlo has had to deal with injuries in training camp that prevented him from defending those titles against the hard-hitting Tim Tszyu.
But when one door closed, another opened. Canelo was originally set to face Jermell’s twin brother, Jermall, but when Jermall was unable to take the fight, Jermell stepped in and took the opportunity to make boxing history.
Charlo said: “Making history means everything to me. That’s what it’s all about. We’ll come back to these moments later in life and look back and enjoy it. Canelo is the kind of fighter you can’t take for granted. He’s done everything in this sport of boxing and he’s got nothing to prove.”
Canelo didn’t take those words lightly because he has heard the skeptics say that he isn’t the fighter he once was and aims to make an example out of Charlo. “Jermell is right, I have nothing to prove,” Canelo said. “But this time, I have something to prove to him. He never believed in my skills. He’s been calling me out. Now I have the opportunity to show him my skills. And that motivates me.”
One fighter is looking to protect his legacy while the other is ready to start his. Who will come out on top?
