Celtic vs. Rangers live score, updates, highlights & lineups from the Scottish Cup semi-final

By | April 17, 2022

Celtic and Rangers will meet for the fourth time this season with the two historic Glasgow rivals this time facing off in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup.

Ange Postecoglou’s team took a giant step towards the Scottish Premiership title with victory over Rangers earlier this month and there is a sense that the Hoops have the edge over the defending Scottish champions right now.

For Celtic, there is a potential Treble on the line. The Hoops have already won this season’s Scottish League Cup in December, and they hold a commanding six-point lead at the top of the Scottish Premiership. A victory over Rangers on Sunday would set them up for a clean sweep of the domestic honours.

Under Postecoglou, Celtic have played a brand of dynamic, modern football that has caught the eye and earned them many admirers. At times, though, Celtic have been guilty of wasting chances in front of goal this season.

Rangers are fresh from making the semi-finals of the Europa League during the week. Continental competition has brought the best out of Giovanni van Bronckhorst’s team this season — can they carry that into Sunday’s Old Firm derby at Hampden Stadium?

Rangers, the defending Scottish champions, have lost the last two Old Firm derbies and have struggled to cope with Celtic’s high-pressing style since the arrival of Postecoglou in Glasgow. Can Rangers end this run on the neutral ground of the national stadium?

Celtic vs. Rangers live updates

105th min: Celtic had more of the ball towards the end of the first period of extra time, the fifteen minutes ending with the ball being worked out to Jota. On his left, inside the area, he teases an angles ball towards the far post. It’s across the face of goal, but nobody gets on the end of it.

100th min: Hatate volleys a dropping ball, mistiming his kick and not troubling the ‘keeper. That came after Tavernier blocked a cross in the area, and then blocked the follow up shot from Jota, sending the ball high into the area. Celtic the better side now, as they win another corner.

98th min: At the other end, Roofe is played in as he arcs a run behind the Celtic defence. He’s played in, but his first touch into the area is heavy, and Joe Hart is quick off his ling to smother the loose ball. It’s end to end at the moment.

96th min: Kyogo looks to be in, as Celtic manage to counter. He looks like he’s bearing down on goal, played in behind the Rangers defence, but Bassey does well to get back and prove enough of an obstacle to put him off.

93rd min: Rangers have once again started as the better side. Their press has been brave and aggressive today, and it’s really helped them sustain pressure at times.

Fulltime: Celtic apply pressure of their own, but it’s not enough to win the game, and we’re heading to extra time in Glasgow.

92nd min: It’s Rangers who are finishing the game more strongly, and it’s a couple of minutes of pressure from the side in blue. Celtic manage to counter, first with Kyogo and then with Jota. They get a corner for their efforts.

91st min: Greg Taylor is the latest player to go down, although he’s quickly back up on his feet. Rangers get in down the left, as Barisic gets past Ralston, who has looked vulnerable. The cut back can only finds Hatate, who hacks clear. Four minutes added on.

89th min: Jota does well to latch onto a loose ball and find space to cross from the right. He finds Kyogo, who has found space to jump in between Bassey and Goldson, but it’s too far out for him to test McLaughlin. With just a few minutes left, this game will go to extra time if nobody can find a winner.

86th min: Goldson stretches to challenge Kyogo. The Celtic forward hobbles away slightly, while the defender stays down for a moment, stretching his lef. He doesn’t receive treatment though, and is up shortly after.

84th min: It’s Rangers in the ascendancy once again. They have the ball in the back of the net, after smart work down the left, but the whistle had gone. Celtic get it forward with Maeda on the left, but his attempted cross is a complete miskick, and out for a goal kick.

Arfield’s goal for UK:

78th min: GOAL!

They’ve equalised! A long ball from Goldson finds Tavernier on the right. He chests it down and crosses early, drilling it low. Arfield gets on the end of it just inside the area, left of centre, and curls it back across goal into the back of the net!

Steven Davis is on for the 700th appearance of his career. Rangers are pushing here, but Joe Hart hasn’t been overly worked in the Celtic goal in the second half. The talk before the game was about whether they would last into the second half, and they’ll have to dig deep if they’re to find something here.

74th min: Kyogo delays on the edge of the area, before sliding a pass out to his left. Goldson lunges in as he plays the pass, and it’s a rash challenge from him. Three Celtic players standing over the free kick. Jota’s shot takes a touch over the wall and flies over.

70th min: Celtic are turning the screw here. After a scramble from a corner kick, Carter Vickers smashes against the bar from close range. From only a couple of metres out, he’ll be wondering how he missed. Rangers head right up the other end and win a corner of their own.

67th min: Since making those changes, Celtic have been the better side, and have looked more energetic than their opponents. The Rangers defence were really caught out with the speed of that routine. Juranovic is down off the pitch,  and receives treatment on the edge of the technical area. He won’t continue.

Celtic’s goal for UK:

64th min: GOAL!

Celtic go ahead! They won a free kick deep on the right. It’s taken short to McGregor, who feeds it forward to Taylor on the edge of the area. He’s in space, Rangers caught out by the quick routine, and he has time to turn and swivel on his left. It deflects off Bassey on the way, and creeps in low at the near post.

60th min: O’Riley is involved almost immediately. Bassey misjudges a long ball down the Celtic right and O’Riley stabs a cross into the area, but it’s cut out before Maeda can meet it.

58th min: Abada is down, and looks to be coming off. There’s a loud reaction from the green and white end as Kyogo gets ready to come on the pitch, with Matt O’Riley also coming on.

55th min: An awkward moment for Rangers, as Celtic press. A loose touch from Bassey almost gives Maeda a chance, and the Rangers man has to get to the ball first and shepherd the ball back to his ‘keeper. Celtic find themselves on the end of a couple of heavy challenges, and their players are incensed that the yellow card hasn’t come out for either.

50th min: Rangers have started the second half in much the same manner they played in the first, and Celtic have had some defending to do in the first few minutes. When they finally get a chance to break, Kemar Roofe slides in on the halfway line and picks up a booking for a very obvious professional foul.

Halftime: Rangers probably the better side in the first half, Celtic failed to really create much. Their press has been dangerous, with McLaughling looking nervous when hurried, but he hasn’t had much to do otherwise.

45th min: Hatate is under pressure from Jack, and looks like he’s gotten away from him before the Rangers man lunges for the ball. He doesn’t get it, but Hatate lands on his right ankle a little awkwardly. He’s down for a while holding it, but he doesn’t get any treatment.

43rd min: It’s a blow for Rangers as Aaron Ramsey sits down, and it’s clear immediately that he won’t be playing on. Scott Wright is on in his place.

42nd min: The ball comes loose to Lundstram on the edge of the Celtic area, right of centre. His first touch shifts it into space on his left, and the second unleashes a curling shot that smacks against the far post. Carter-Vickers has to alert to the rebound, before it breaks to a man in blue.

35th min: McGregor goes flying as he and Lundstram come together for a 50/50 challenge. The ball breaks to Jota on the halfway line and, despite a host of Rangers players around him, he wins carries the ball forward well and wins a free kick on the left. Postecoglou’s team haven’t quite clicked yet when they’ve got into the final third. Rangers counter well down the left. Roofe gets a header on a cross which is stood up towards the far post, but it’s half cleared. The ball comes back in and Aribo heads straight at Joe Hart from just a few metres out. The Rangers man is down holding his back briefly.

30th min: Rangers get a free kick on the edge of the D after Kemar Roofe goes trying to evade challenges amongst a crowd for Celtic players. Aaron Ramsey takes it. He gets it up, but it doesn’t come down. Rangers win another free kick shortly after, and they have a little more control at the moment.

25th min: Abada has Barisic one on one and drives at him, cutting in onto his left before flashing wide of the near post. Van Bronckhorst will be hoping that duel isn’t repeated too many times.

22nd min: Tavernier puts in a delicious cross from the right, that has to be headed clear for a Rangers corner. It’s hard to believe twenty minutes are gone already, this game is flying by.

18th min: Celtic are seeing more of the ball here, but Rangers look a threat when they get it. The timing of Aaron Ramsey’s runs has already caused a couple of problems for the team in green and white.

13th min: A couple of moments for Celtic. A long kick from Hart catches Tavernier out as it finds Jota. He bursts into the centre of the pitch and tries an effort from distance, but the height he got on it means it’s more of a concern for low flying aircraft than it is for McLaughlin. Hatate finds Jota again, edge of the area on the left, but he doesn’t play the early ball for Maeda and the chance goes. Rangers are in the ascendancy again, and the momentum in this game is swinging from one side to the other like a metronome on steroids.

9th min: A couple more chances for bot teams, coupled with a heavy challenge on Aribo from McGregor. Both teams looking dangerous, with Jota having headed narrowly over for Celtic.

4th min: Rangers have the first chance of the game. They win the ball back and counter. Ramsey plays in Kent to his left, and McGregor manages to slide in and put Kent off his shot. The stadium was full of smoke from the pyrotechnics at kickoff, but the air is beginning to clear now. The game has started at a frenetic pace.

1 min before kickoff: The teams are out at Hampden Park. Red flares light up the Rangers end, and the noise level has grown even more. Ange Postecoglou and Giovanni van Bronckhorst share a warm embrace on the touchline, but I wouldn’t expect too much of that kind of thing over the next couple of hours.

3 mins before kickoff: As you would imagine, there’s not an empty seat in the house at Hampden Park. With just a few minutes to go, the flags are waving and both sets of fans are in full voice.

15 mins before kickoff: Only fifteen minutes till kickoff now. It’s a relatively early start, but that won’t dampen the atmosphere in Glasgow one bit. This matchup is always high stakes and, with a place in a cup final on the line, no quarter will be shown today.

35 mins before kickoff: Just one change for Rangers after their midweek efforts, and that comes in goal where John McLaughlin starts. It’ll be interesting to see how Van Brocnkhorst’s side cope later on in the game, having played in midweek.

55 mins before kickoff: Both sides are at Hampden Park, and the team news is in for what is sure to be a fiery clash.

2 hours before kickoff: Hello and welcome to Sporting News’ live coverage of the Scottish Cup semi-final between Celtic and Rangers. This should be another pulsating Old Firm derby between two historic rivals with plenty to play for. We’ll bring you all the action as it happens including team news as and when it’s released.

Celtic vs. Rangers lineups
