Chargers vs. Raiders live score, updates, highlights from NFL ‘Thursday Night Football’ game

By | December 14, 2023

The Raiders and Chargers have followed nearly identical paths this season, and neither has been ideal.

Las Vegas fired Josh McDaniels after a 3-5 start, climbed back to .500 and has since dropped to 5-8. Los Angeles started 2-4, climbed back to .500 and has also fallen out of the playoff conversation at 5-8. A coaching change may be in store for the Chargers as well in the coming weeks.

The biggest storyline entering the “Thursday Night Football” matchup between these AFC West rivals is the absence of Chargers QB Justin Herbert, who is set to miss the remainder of the season. Herbert has never missed a start due to injury, but that will change when former fifth-round pick Easton Stick makes his first NFL start in Las Vegas.

While the Chargers should be at a disadvantage with Stick having so little in-game experience at the NFL level, the Raiders are dealing with quarterback uncertainty of their own. Interim coach Antonio Pierce declined to commit to rookie Aidan O’Connell as his starter during the week, days after a 3-0 loss to the Vikings.

Whether it’s O’Connell or the veteran Jimmy Garoppolo under center for Las Vegas, offense might be hard to come by against a Chargers defense that taken positive steps even as the team has spiraled.

Both of these teams could look very different in 2024, and a loss on Thursday night might expedite some of those changes as the offseason approaches.
