Chile vs. Brazil lineups, expected starting 11, confirmed team news: No Alisson, Vinicius or Militao as Selecao seek World Cup qualifying boost

By | October 9, 2024

Two South American sides in desperate need of a turnaround clash in Santiago on Thursday as Brazil travel to meet Chile in CONMEBOL World Cup qualifying.

The Selecao were able to rescue three points with a win over Ecuador in September to bump them to fifth in the standings, but a subsequent defeat to Paraguay on the road erased all the positive vibes gained from that victory.

To make matters worse, Brazil have been hit by a number of significant injuries, with both Alisson and Vinicius Jr. not with the team, meaning they must press on without a few of their key players.

Chile, meanwhile, are amidst their own dire run of form, sitting second from bottom in the World Cup qualifying standings and coming off a massively embarrassing defeat to Bolivia at home last time out. While Bolivia are known to secure results at their La Paz fortress, which sits at massive elevation, losing to La Verde at your own home ground is a different matter entirely.

Chile vs. Brazil lineups, predicted starting 11, team news

Head coach Ricardo Gareca has made a number of bold decisions for this international break. He has left out goalkeeper Gabriel Arias, who failed to convince in replacing retired legend Claudio Bravo. Instead, he will likely go with Brayan Cortes who is the only goalkeeper on the roster with a senior international cap.

Full-back Gabriel Suazo sustained a hamstring injury and will miss this international window, and the same can be said of Marcelino Nunez.

Also still frozen out are aging veterans Alexis SanchezGary Medel, Charles Aranguiz, and Mauricio Isla. The former three have been out of the mix for some time, while Isla was left off this month’s roster following the disappointment last time out against Bolivia. Also not selected was Matias Catalan, meaning three of the four starting defenders from the Bolivia game are not with the team a month later, and striker Ben Brereton Diaz does not appear, either.

Chile predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Arias (GK) — Loyola, Maripan, P. Diaz, Galdames — Pulgar, Pavez, Echeverria — Valdes — Davila, Vargas.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Brayan Cortes, Lawrence Vigouroux, Vicente Reyes

Defenders: Guillermo Maripan, Paulo Diaz, Bejamin Kuscevic, Matias Zaldivia, Fabian Hormazabal, Felipe Loyola, Marcelo Morales, Thomas Galdames

Midfielders: Rodrigo Echeverria, Erick Pulgar, Ulises Ortegoza, Williams Alarcon, Esteban Pavez, Diego Valdes, Carlos Palacios

Forwards: Dario Osorio, Victor Davila, Luciano Cabral, Eduardo Vargas, Maximiliano Guerrero, Gonzalo Tapia, Lucas Cepeda

MORE: Could Neymar really return to Barcelona?

The most notable player missing for Brazil is goalkeeper Alisson, who was forced to withdraw due to an injury sustained just days before the international break.

Also out is Real Madrid duo Eder Militao and Vinicius, as the pair was two of multiple Blancos teammates to take the October window off after fitness scares. Juventus defender Bremer sustained a serious knee injury on the weekend and will miss significant time.

To make matters worse, three domestic-based players are also unable to participate due to injury, as Yan CoutoPedro, and Guilherme Arana are all unavailable. All this is piled on top of the continued absence of Neymar who remains sidelined with his ACL tear, although he is expected back on the pitch sometime in the next month.

Brazil predicted XI (4-3-3, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Danilo, Marquinhos, Gabriel, Telles — Paqueta, Pereira, Guimaraes — Raphinha, Rodrygo, Martinelli.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Weverton, Bento, Ederson

Defenders: Danilo, Vanderson, Alex Telles, Abner, Beraldo, Fabricio Bruno, Gabriel, Marquinhos

Midfielders: Andre, Bruno Guimaraes, Andreas Pereira, Gerson, Lucas Paqueta, Rodrygo

Forwards: Endrick, Raphinha, Luiz Henrique, Igor Jesus, Savinho, Gabriel Martinelli
