Clippers vs. Timberwolves score, highlights: D’Angelo Russell comes up clutch, Timberwolves play Grizzlies in NBA Playoffs

After a seven year absence, the Minnesota Timberwolves are back in the NBA Playoffs.

Led by D’Angelo Russell and Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves took charge in the fourth quarter to defeat the Los Angeles Clippers 109-104 in the NBA Play-in Tournament on Tuesday.

Russell finished the game with 29 points, six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Edwards led the Timberwolves in scoring, hitting five threes and finishing with 30 points. 

This was an impressive win for Minnesota, who weathered multiple runs from the Clippers and were able to get the victory despite All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns fouling out in the fourth quarter. Towns was out of sorts all night, picking up three offensive fouls and finishing with just 11 points in 24 minutes of action. 

Without Towns, the Timberwolves as a whole, stepped up their game. They picked up their effort on both ends of the court and hit key shots in big moments. It was a total team win, and one that Timberwolves veteran guard Patrick Beverley relished with great exuberance. 

Paul George’s 34 points led the Clippers, who now will take on the winner of a game between the New Orleans Pelicans and San Antonio Spurs.

Fourth Quarter

12:30 a.m — And that will do it. The Timberwolves are heading back to the playoffs. Minnesota wins 109-104.

12:27 a.m. — Paul George responds with a big three of his own to cut the lead to 108-104, but the Clippers might just run out of time here.

12:26 a.m. — Talk to ’em Pat Bev! Beverley picks Reggie Jackson’s pocket and forces the turnover. A huge defensive play down the stretch.

12:22 a.m. — Here comes Ant-Man! Anthony Edwards attacks the rim and draws the foul. He slots both to put the Timberwolves up by five points with 38.5 seconds remaining

12:18 a.m. — D’Angelo Russell stays clutch! He drains another big bucket to give the Timberwolves their biggest lead of the night at 104-98, making it a 21-5 run over the last 7:05.

12:16 am — Nic Batum answers right back with a three on the other end. It’s going right down to the wire!

12:10 a.m. — D’Angelo Russell has ice in his veins. The Timberwolves guard just hit a deep three in transition to give Minnesota the 97-95 lead with 4:39 left in the game. The Timberwolves are on a 14-2 run.

12:00 a.m. — The Timberwolves won’t go away. Malik Beasley just hit a big three and the Timberwolves now trail the Clippers 93-90 with 6:39 left in the game. Unfortunately for Minnesota, they will have to try to win without Karl-Anthony Towns, who fouled out after making a rather head-scratching sixth foul.

Third Quarter

11:45 p.m. — Paul George just reminded everyone why he’s the best player in this game. PG-13 dropped 17 points of his 26 points in the third and now the Clippers are back in the lead, 84-78, heading into the fourth. 

11:30 p.m. — KAT may be out of sorts but the rest of the Timberwolves are locked. Minnesota is keeping their foot on the gas to start the second half and have jumped out to a 63-58 lead over the Clippers with 7:05 left in the third. 

Second Quarter

11:00 p.m. — D’Angelo Russell stepped up in a big way in the second quarter for the Timberwolves. The 26-year-old guard dropped 14 points in the second and led the Timberwolves on a big 15-6 run to close out the first half and take the lead from the Clippers. At the half, the Timberwolves lead 53-51.

10:45 p.m. — Karl-Anthony Towns has two points and four fouls. The rest of the Timberwolves are doing their part though and have cut into the Clippers lead. With 2:37 left in the second, the Clippers are clinging onto a 45-44 lead. 

10:30 p.m. — Anthony Edwards is keeping the Timberwolves in this game. The 20-year-old phenom has 15 points but the Clippers still lead 41-36 with 6:05 left in the second. 

First Quarter

10:15 p.m. — Jaden McDaniels drills a three at the buzzer to cut into the Clippers lead. Karl-Anthony Towns has not yet to score for Minnesota. At the end of the first quarter, the Clippers lead 26-20.

10:05 p.m. — Welp, Patrick Beverley just picked up his third foul. A big blow for Minnesota as their veteran leader will now have to likely sit out for the rest of the first half. Clippers lead 17-13 with 2:32 left in the first quarter.

10:00 p.m. — Thanks to the play of Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves jumped out to an early lead. The Clippers remained calm though and quickly went on a 10-0 run to lead 12-7 with 6:29 left in the first quarter.

Pregame

9:10 p.m. — Injury update for Minnesota: Taurean Prince has been ruled out.

9 p.m. — Starting for the Wolves: D’Angelo Russell, Patrick Beverley, Anthony Edwards, Jarred Vanderbilt and Karl-Anthony Towns.

8:15 p.m. — The stars have arrived and are ready to go.

To no surprise, the Clippers will be without Kawhi Leonard, but Luke Kennard has shown up on the injury report as questionable.

The Wolves have a clean bill of health outside of Taurean Prince, who is also listed as questionable.

How does the NBA Play-In Tournament work?

  • The NBA Play-In Tournament will be held after the conclusion of the 2021-22 regular season and before the start of the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs. The teams that finish Nos. 1-6 in the standings of each conference will be guaranteed playoff spots. Teams Nos. 7-10 will enter the Play-In Tournament.
  • Each conference’s Nos. 7 and 8 teams will face off, with the winner earning the No. 7 seed in the playoffs. The loser will still have one more opportunity to reach the playoffs.
  • Each conference’s Nos. 9 and 10 teams will face off, with the winner advancing to play the loser of the No. 7-vs.-No. 8 game. The loser of the No. 9-vs.-No. 10 game will be eliminated from playoff contention.
  • The loser of the No. 7-vs.-No. 8 game and the winner of the No. 9-vs.-No. 10 game will then play against each other. The winner of that game will be the No. 8 seed in the playoffs. The loser will be eliminated from playoff contention.
  • Beyond the Play-In Tournament, the 2022 NBA Playoffs will follow the typical format, with full best-of-seven series all the way through the NBA Finals.
