Since Andrew Luck’s retirement in 2019, many have suggested that the Colts were a quarterback away from being a playoff contender.
They look a lot further away than that at this point.
The bottom fell out on the Colts during the 2022 NFL season, as the team posted a 4-12-1 record. Matt Ryan proved to be an ineffective starter in his age-37 season while the team’s usually strong offensive line and defense failed to keep the team competitive.
As a result, coach Frank Reich was fired midseason. That led to a strange interim coach choice, Jeff Saturday, and eventually to the hiring of Shane Steichen to right the ship in Indy.
Steichen’s Colts may be facing a rebuild, but they have the resources needed to turn the team around quickly. Their success in changing the team’s outlook will be determined by their performance in the 2023 NFL Draft, as the team will have a top-five section with which to change the course of its future.

Colts NFL Draft needs
- Quarterback: QB has been atop the Colts’ wish list since Andrew Luck’s surprising retirement ahead of the 2019 NFL season. They have the No. 4 selection in the draft and owner Jim Irsay has indicated that taking a quarterback there is a possibility. The only question is about which of the four top passers — Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, Anthony Richardson or Will Levis — will be on the board when the Colts make their pick.
- Wide receiver: Parris Campbell enjoyed a breakout season for the Colts in 2022, but he signed a one-year deal with the Giants in free agency. Indianapolis added Isaiah McKenzie to replace him and pair him with Michael Pittman Jr. and Alec Pierce, but adding another quality receiver would be a great help to the team’s new quarterback.
- Offensive tackle: The Colts’ offensive line wasn’t as strong in 2022 as it was in previous seasons. As such, they could stand to add an upgrade to create competition across the unit. Tackle is a bit more unsettled that the interior line — though center Ryan Kelly regressed in 2022 — so that would appear to be the more realistic target for Indianapolis.
- Cornerback: Indianapolis traded Stephon Gilmore to the Cowboys during the 2023 offseason. As such, the team needs to add a quality outside player to pair with Isaiah Rodgers and slot man Kenny Moore II. This could be an area that the Colts address sooner than most expect.
- Edge rusher: One of the reasons the Eagles had so much success in 2022 was because they had one of the best pass rushes in NFL history. Shane Steichen will want to emulate that in Indianapolis, so the Colts could search for a star at the position or simply add depth with upside to compete for snaps behind Kwity Paye and Samson Ebukam.
