Commanders GM explains why he’s ‘excited’ after landing Marshon Lattimore from Saints

By | November 6, 2024

After exceeding expectations with a 7-2 record after nine games into the 2024 season, the Washington Commanders showcased determination to elevate the quality of their roster after landing cornerback Marshon Lattimore in a trade with the New Orleans Saints.

They completed the deal on Nov. 5, only sending a third-round pick to the Saints to acquire the seasoned defender. Lattimore played in 97 games, making 405 tackles, 88 pass breakups, and 15 interceptions as he won the Defensive Rookie of the Year in 2017 and was named a Pro Bowler four times and counting.

He is set to join a defense that ranks fifth in passing yards allowed per game with 183.3. While their scoring defense is 11th with 21 points allowed per contest, the addition of Lattimore will allow Washington to improve their defensive numbers while maintaining their offensive prowess.

Commanders General Manager Adam Peters didn’t take long to showcase his approval of the trade, saying he’s “excited” to bring Lattimore’s talent over to Washington, per JP Finlay of NBC Sports.

The Commanders have been largely successful due to the rise of rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. He is throwing for 1,945 yards and nine touchdowns and two interceptions. He also boasts a high completion rate of 71.5%, being successful on 163 of his 228 passes, having won Offensive Rookie of the Month in September.

His chemistry with Terry McLaurin has been highlighted, with the wide receiver benefitting from Daniels targeting him frequently. McLaurin currently has 42 catches for 598 yards and six touchdowns. He is on the verge of matching his career-high in receiving touchdowns in a season with seven in 2019.

With a 7-2 record, Washington leads the NFC East as they hold a one-game lead over the Philadelphia Eagles in the division. In the NFC, the Commanders are second only to the 7-1 Detroit Lions.

Washington has a tough matchup for Week 10, facing a disciplined Pittsburgh Steelers squad that will look to limit Daniels and McLaurin’s production. The game is set to take place on Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. ET.
