Could Red Sox trade Gold Glove winner to land ace?

By | November 8, 2024

The Boston Red Sox need an ace, and they need one now. How they get one, is the question. Currently, the best option available through trade is the Chicago White Sox’s ace, Garrett Crochet, but what would the Sox have to give up for him?

Some fans think the rookie Gold Glove winner, Wilyer Abreu, to be the answer. Combined with some prospects, they could be swapped for Crochet.

However, there are other options as well. If the Sox front office decides to break up the Big Four, the Sox’s top prospects, they could send one in a trade for Crochet.

Roman Anthony, the Sox’s top prospect and best in baseball, is off the table. Kyle Teel, a potential franchise catcher, should be as well, but might not be.

This leaves Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell, two middle infielders. What the Sox could do is trade one of them, and put the other at second base until Trevor Story leaves the team.

Hopefully, it’s the latter. Abreu is a stud outfielder who is just scratching the surface of his potential, and has already cemented himself as a core piece of the Red Sox. Losing a top prospect would hurt, but getting an ace the team needs would make it better.
