The Dallas Cowboys lost veteran backup quarterback Cooper Rush to the Baltimore Ravens, and they could lose another quarterback to a division rival.
Rush signed a two-year deal with the Ravens to play behind Lamar Jackson. With Trey Lance also a free agent, the Cowboys currently need an experienced backup quarterback. They could bring back Lance who started for the team in Week 18. However, Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox tabbed the Washington Commanders as a fit for Lance.
“The best fits for Lance are teams that already employ dual-threat quarterbacks in their offenses—specifically, the Baltimore Ravens and Washington Commanders,” wrote Knox. “The Philadelphia Eagles would also fit, but they just picked up a similar developmental quarterback in Dorian Thompson-Robinson. In Baltimore or Washington, Lance could sit and learn behind a quarterback with similar Physical tools. He could also be utilized occasionally in obvious running situations.”
With the Ravens now likely out of the running for a backup quarterback, the Commanders make sense. Jayden Daniels had a phenomenal rookie season. However, the Commanders could use Lance to keep hits off of their franchise quarterback in obvious running situations.
Lance was the No. 3 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent his rookie season behind Jimmy Garoppolo before eventually losing his job to Brock Purdy. Lance started just one game as a Cowboy and went 20-for-34 and 244 yards. The Cowboys lost the game to the eventual; NFC runner-ups, the Commanders.
