We are nearly two months into free agency and the 2025 NFL draft has come and gone and there is still nothing new with Aaron Rodgers and the Pittsburgh Steelers.
The last we heard from him was during his April appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” when he revealed he had yet to make a decision and still considers retirement as a possibility.
At this point, the Steelers are very clearly all-in on Rodgers. They didn’t take a signal-caller early in the draft, with their lone selection at the position coming in the sixth round when they selected Will Howard.
In addition to Howard, the Steelers have Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson on the roster, but neither one of those players are starting-caliber options, which will leave the Steelers with a massive problem if Rodgers opts to call it quits.
The Athletic’s Mike Jones recently touched on the situation involving Rodgers and the Steelers and he thinks it’s possible the Steelers draft approach could help make Rodgers’ decision easier.
“The Steelers didn’t draft a quarterback until the sixth round, when they selected Ohio State’s Will Howard,” he wrote. “That could make Rodgers feel a little more secure in joining them. But, one never can tell with Rodgers, who said recently he has been dealing with some personal matters and has no timeline for his decision.”
While that certainly makes some sense considering Rodgers now doesn’t have to worry about the embarrassment of being benched for a rookie quarterback if he struggles, we would say that’s far down on the priorities list for him.
After all, if that was the last hurdle Rodgers needed to clear in order to sign up with Pittsburgh, he would’ve done so immediately after the draft. That obviously has not happened.
Instead, we believe it’s a true conundrum for the quarterback between playing his age-42 season or retiring and it has nothing to do with who is in the quarterbacks room currently.
However, we believe Rodgers will ultimately be the starter in Pittsburgh for the 2025 campaign.
