Morten Hjulmand’s excellent long-range strike brought Denmark level with England in Euro 2024 Group C.

The playing surface in Frankfurt cut up badly throughout the first half, with numerous players losing their footing and misplacing passes.

It was arguably an factor in Harry Kane’s 18th minute opener as Jude Bellingham’s pass held up in the turf and Kyle Walker nipped in behind Victor Kristiansen. Bukayo Saka helped on a scuffed low cross and Kane poached a record-extending 64th England goal.

But the Three Lions captain was culpable as he gave the ball away 10 minutes before halftime and Hjulmand lashed home from 25 yards via the inside of the post.

54 mins: Gallagher on for Alexander-Arnold. Is that the end of the experiment? It’s worth asking why on earth that couldn’t have happened at halftime.

53 mins: Saka in behind onto a hopeful punt behind. Hesitation from Schmeichel and Kristiansen, who must have had better afternoons, and the Arsenal star heads into the side netting.

51 mins: Alexander-Arnold able to drive down the middle. The pass in behind Foden but he keeps the attack alive and is on hand to reach Saka’s cross before Denmark clear. Rice shoots and a deflection off Hjulmand doesn’t unduly inconvenience Schmeichel.

49 mins: Slow, lethargic stuff before Alexnader-Arnold booms the ball to no one. Authentically awful carry on from England, this.

47 mins: More scrappy stuff as a deflected ball forward seen Stones climb above Wind. Pickford is able to claim. Now Hojbjerg thinks he’s snaffled possession from Alexander-Arnold but the England man is somewhat generously given a free-kick.

2nd Half: Kickoff

We’re back underway. No changes for England. Surely Southgate must have been tempted.

Halftime

Foden blooters one over from range and that is that. England led through Harry Kane but they were very poor after going ahead, completely lacking in midfield control. They’re also playing out from the back awfully, meaning Kane and the other forwards are dropping too deep. In short, it’s a mess and Denmark might feel they’ve missed a trick by only having Morten Hjulmand fine strike to show for their efforts.

45 mins: England players taking it in turns to make a show of themselves on the ball. Stones and then Rice within a minute. Denmark can’t capitalise.

43 mins: Finally a bit of England possession in the Denmark half. It ends with a Foden cross that scoots beyond Saka.

41 mins: Foden turns and gets into one of his snake-hipped dribbles. However, he can only shovel a shot into Schmeichel’s arms, and Kane wanted a through ball.

40 mins: Denmark saunter through the England press. They’ll want to make this count before halftime. Unfortunately, Mehle hits his cross into next week.

38 mins: England are all over the place here. They fall deep and Hjulmand gets to line up another long-ranger, which is deflected behind. Anderson’s header from a tight angle at the back post ends up on the roof of the net.

35 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Morten Hjulmand!!!!

Another long-range beauty in this tournament. England, as they have been more broadly since going ahead, culpable in their own struggles as Kane comes back to collect a throw-in and plays an aimless pass in field. Hjulmand lined one up from 25 yards and the ball pinged home off the inside of Pickford’s right post.

32 mins: Guehi gets a challenge in on Wind, sending a shot looping behind for a corner. Another passage of play where the pitch was nonsensical, by the way.

31 mins: Pickford having himself a few moments here. He comes for a cross and doesn’t get all of it. England are able to break, though and Christensen makes a vital challenge to thwart Saka.

29 mins: Hojbjerg stabs a cross around Bellingham. Pickford hesitates and Eriksen gets there before him. The Manchester United playmaker looks for his club mate Hojlund and Alexander-Arnold gets back well.

26 mins: Eriksen bursts into a pocket of space and Bellingham gets back to shut the door. Hojbjerg chucks himself on the ground, which is somewhat rich. England break and Vestergaard brings him down. That’s a yellow card and not ideal for a member of a back three that collectively can’t count pace as a strong suit.

25 mins: A looping ball finds Wind at the far post but he can’t get clear of Stones and Pickford gathers unfussily.

24 mins: Decent response from Denmark since conceding, while England have fallen deeper after going ahead, as is often their wont. No clear chances to show for it yet.

22 mins: Meaty tackle from Rice, who takes the ball, a slipping Hojbjerg and a job lot of turf with him. 

18 mins: GOOOOOAAAAAALLLLL!!!!!! Harry Kane!!!!

England’s skipper is off and running. Bellingham’s pass in behind Kristiansen holds up on the pitch. The Denmark wingback is unforgivably napping. Walker scoots around him in his new boots. The cross is slightly scuffed but it reaches Kane via Saka for a masterful piece of poaching.

17 mins: Excellent high pressing from Rice. That might be England’s best route on this surface, as passing out from the back could be perilous. Kane has a shot blocked.

16 mins: Alexander-Arnold fails to find Foden, who looks down ruefully at a couple of loose divots. This is going to look like they’ve stages Horse of the Year Show by fulltime!

13 mins: Lovely feet from Foden, who sends Hojbjerg for a hotdog – fittingly so, given we’re in Frankfurt – only to lift his shot aimed for the top left corner way over.

12 mins: Latest from pitchwatch. Guehi loses his footing and Hojlund looks to be goal side. The England centre-back gets back impressively to win the ball and the flag goes up. The slip probably played Hojlund offside, as it happens.

9 mins: A stoppage now as Walker is down. The turf giving way on him appears to have damaged his left ankle. Just not the sort of thing that should be happening at a major international tournament.

8 mins: Recalled Denmark wingback Maehle looks to raid down the England left. He takes a heavy touch and fouls Trippier.

7 mins: Walker brings up more bits of turf before a pass over the top from Stones to Saka is overhit. A soft playing surface and some of this iffy early passing from both teams might be linked. Not ideal.

5 mins: Trippier the latest England player to whack a pass off target. There’s been a few. It’s not been the most assured start in possession from Southgate’s men.

2 mins: Walker gets down the right-hand side, takes a chunk of turf with him and consequently can’t get enough purchase on his low cross towards Foden.

1st Half: Kickoff

Saka gets us underway. Pickford thumps one long towards Kane. It comes back with interest and Hojlund sets up a Denmark attack down the left. Hojbjerg arrives to give the England goalkeeper a routine save.

5 mins before kickoff: The teams are in the tunnel. Can England really put a marker down, one befitting of their status as many people’s pre-tournament favourites. Or can Denmark throw Group C into flux. Here they come to huge roars in at Deutsche Bank Park.

30 mins before kickoff: In today’s earlier Group C game, it had looked as though Slovenia were heading for three points before Serbia snatched an equaliser with practically the final touch of the game. 

Zan Karnicnik put Slovenia in front after starting and finishing a swift attacking move, and as their opponents largely toiled in front of goal — with the exception of an Aleksandar Mitrovic strike that rattled the crossbar — it seemed destined to end 1-0.

However, Luka Jovic rose highest to head home from a corner in the 95th minute, scoring the latest result-altering goal in any European Championship match in history.

50 mins before kickoff: Southgate went out of his way to praise Phil Foden’s selfless work out of possession against Serbia, claiming England would not have won the game without it. A cynic would say this was a means of taking the attention away from the Premier League Player of the Season’s unusually wasteful night in possession. The sense is that this England side could really take flight if Foden and Jude Bellingham can harness their supreme talents in tandem. This might be easier said than done. It could become the Gen Z Lampard-Gerrard quandary.

Foden has found versatility to be a virtue while establishing himself at Manchester City, with his masterpiece of a 2023/24 campaign the end result of years of precision planning under Pep Guardiola. As such, he has learned how to play second-fiddle to the likes of Kevin De Bruyne when needed. Bellingham understandably came into the tournament exuding main-character energy following his Real Madrid heroics. The challenge for Southgate is to make sure this enhances the qualities of Foden, Kane and Alexander-Arnold and doesn’t smother them.

England are unchanged from their opening win over Serbia, which means Trent Alexander-Arnold remains in midfield.

Denmark make a single change from their first game, with Joakim Maehle in for Alexander Bah.

Reports in England suggest Gareth Southgate is set to stick with the XI that beat Serbia 1-0 despite a patchy performance from some of his creative stars. The Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment is expected to continue, which has a certain logic to it. Whatever the merits of deploying Liverpool’s right-back-cum-quarterback in central midfield, Gareth Southgate says he has been working on this means of getting Alexander-Arnold into his XI for over a year. Junking it after 90 minutes that were hardly a disaster would be a strange and very un-Southgate move.

Luke Shaw continued to train away from his team-mates as he builds match fitness, so the game in Frankfurt comes too soon for the Manchester United left-back to start.

Southgate sticks with an unchanged XI from the Serbia game, giving the Trent Alexander-Arnold midfield experiment another chance to bed in.
