English Premier League table 2022/23: Updated EPL standings as Arsenal remain top

By | April 5, 2023

Arsenal will head into the weekend with an eight-point lead atop the Premier League table with just nine matches left to play in the season.

Second-place Manchester City have a game in hand, and they know they need to keep winning in order to be in best position to capitalise on their head-to-head meeting when they host the Gunners on April 26.

Manchester United bounced back into the top four with a midweek win over Brentford and can solidify that spot with another home game on the weekend against Everton.

Staying with the top four, Brighton could make a statement and emerge as a legitimate surprise contender for a Champions League berth when they travel to face Tottenham on Saturday.

The relegation battle will see a massive Leicester City vs. Bournemouth showdown on Saturday, followed by Leeds United vs. Crystal Palace on Sunday. The struggling big names Everton (at Man United) and West Ham (at Fulham) have tough matches of their own coming up.

Below is the full Premier League table followed by a snapshot of each race.

Premier League title race

Arsenal remain in a strong position with nine games of the Premier League season remaining, although they still have to play Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle and Chelsea.

City will be eagerly anticipating their showdown against the Gunners at Etihad Stadium on April 26, and their game in hand, which would help reduce the deficit further.

It’s worth noting how the frontrunners are close to level on goal difference and goals scored, which are the tiebreakers should the teams finish even on points.

Champions League places, European places

The top four in the table automatically qualify to next season’s Champions League group stage. Fifth place, along with the FA Cup winner, qualify directly to the Europa League group stage

With Manchester United winning the Carabao Cup and also on track to finish in the top four, that means the Conference League qualifying spot that is awarded to the Carabao winners will be passed on to the 6th-place team in the Premier League table (for now).

If Man City or Man United win the FA Cup, then the Europa League group stage spot that comes with that trophy would go to 6th place, while the Conference League qualifying spot gets bumped down to the 7th place team.

European places as of Wednesday, April 5:

  • Champions League berths (4): Arsenal, Man City, Newcastle, Man United
  • Europa League berths (2): Tottenham, FA Cup winner
  • Conference League qualifying berth (1): Brighton

Premier League relegation

The bottom nine clubs are all firmly in the relegation mix within just seven points separating them. That’s pretty tight with about nine games remaining for every team.

There’s still a lot that can happen, and with unexpected names like West Ham and Leicester City still involved in the scrap. A 2-1 loss to Crystal Palace led to Leicester letting Brendan Rodgers go with 10 matches remaining.

West Ham boss David Moyes got a momentary reprieve after beating last-place Southampton, but he’s right back in the hot seat after a 5-1 dismantling at the hands of Newcastle in midweek. It doesn’t get any easier with a trip to face Fulham on the weekend.

Leeds United shot up from 18th to 13th after beating Nottingham Forest, another sign of just how tight things are at the bottom of the table. Leeds can next overtake Crystal Palace in the table when they host Roy Hodgson’s side on April 9.
