Manchester United’s attempts to bounce back from their thrashing by Manchester City began in inauspicious fashion at Goodison Park.
A stunning strike from Alex Iwobi has given Everton an early lead, with Casemiro having lost possession in his own half in the build-up to the goal.
The Red Devils responded through Antony, who struck his third goal in as many Premier League matches after being played in by Anthony Martial, who soon had to go off with another injury.
His replacement, Cristiano Ronaldo, fired United into the lead before halftime with the 700th club goal of his storied career.

Everton vs. Manchester United live commentary, highlights
90+1 mins: De Gea makes a crucial save! Was it a shot or a cross from Garner? It’s hard to say, but De Gea leapt to his left to claw the ball away as Onana looked to get a head on it. The corner ends up bouncing off a blue shirt and behind for a goal kick. Ten Hag is bringing on Raphael Varane for these closing moments, with Antony making way.
90 mins: Half a chance for Onana! Gray gets the ball in from the right and Onana rises relatively unchallenged, but he can’t direct the header on target. We’re into four minutes of injury time here…
89 mins: Everton are battling hard but United’s defence is sound and they keep the ball for a couple of minutes. Iwobi then launches another cross from deep into the box but Lindelof, again, is there to head away. McNeil then tries a delivery from almost the same square of turf, and De Gea catches.
86 mins: Scott McTominay, on as a sub, goes into the book for catching Gray. Pickford launches the free-kick forward but Onana’s header drifts out for a goal kick.
84 mins: That was unfortunate for Rashford, who couldn’t really do much about the ball bouncing up and touching his arm. Considering Gianluca Scamacca had a goal allowed for West Ham against Fulham today in similar circumstances, it makes the decision a bit of a harsh one. Still, it’s certainly given the home crowd a lift for these closing minutes.
81 mins: GOAL FOR UNITED — no! It’s disallowed! Rashford thought he had scored United’s third but a VAR check has ruled the ball struck his arm in the build-up as he hurdled a challenge from Tarkowski. The score remains 2-1 to the visitors.
78 mins: United have really struggled with their passing in this half and it’s giving the Everton crowd some belief, although the home side are still finding it tough to create chances. Garner’s first impact for Everton is a sore one for Fernandes as he stands on the toe of his old team-mate.
74 mins: Half a chance for Eriksen, who is teed up by Ronaldo but blasts over the bar with his left foot. Rashford then tries his luck with a half-volley but doesn’t catch it right. We’re about to see Calvert-Lewin for the hosts, along with James Garner, the former United midfielder.
72 mins: Onana gets his head on a corner but it’s too high. At the other end, Fernandes and Rashford combine but the latter’s cross is cut out by Pickford.
70 mins: It’s been pretty scrappy this half as the rain has got heavier. United keep giving the ball away but they’re restricting Everton to largely hopeful crosses. Ten Hag will certainly want his side to find a third goal to make things a little more comfortable.
66 mins: Eriksen’s free-kick was a dangerous one, but Martinez just couldn’t reach it. United then break after some more Everton pressure but Coleman makes a timely intervention to cut out Rashford’s cross towards Ronaldo. The corner comes to nothing. Lampard makes his first change, taking off Gordon for Dwight McNeil.
62 mins: Another Everton cross from the left is volleyed back towards the middle by Iwobi, but there’s no blue shirt to meet it. Gordon is now going into the book for a heavy challenge on Fernandes, who was attacking down the left. That means a one-game ban for the Everton youngster — it’s his fifth yellow card of the season.

57 mins: Great battling from Gray down the left but Maupay can’t get a head on his cross. Everton are just starting to put some pressure on here — will we see Dominic Calvert-Lewin before long?
54 mins: Shaw joins in a United attack down the left and, after Rashford is tackled, he sprints back to muscle Iwobi off the ball. Good work from the left-back there.
52 mins: Casemiro lines up a shot from the edge of the box… and it’s nowhere near the goal.
45 mins: We’re back underway at Goodison Park.
HALFTIME: United take a 2-1 lead into the break, having come from behind to lead for the second time this week. Iwobi’s wonderful opener was cancelled out by Antony’s third goal in three league games, before substitute Ronaldo struck goal number 700 of his club career.
45 +2 mins: Gray fires in a cross from the right but it’s straight into De Gea’s grasp (that all came from another Casemiro errant pass, by the way). That signals the end of the half.
44 mins: UNITED TAKE THE LEAD THROUGH CRISTIANO RONALDO! My word, Casemiro has had an eventful half! He loses the ball to Iwobi then wins it straight back and arrows a pass into the path of Ronaldo. The forward sprints into the box and drills left-footed below Pickford. That was a ruthless combination between the former Real Madrid team-mates.

42 mins: What a chance for Casemiro! Rashford’s cross from the left splits the Everton defence and Casemiro only has to nod it into the net, and he puts it wide! That’s a dreadful miss from the Brazilian.
41 mins: A loose pass from Dalot gives Everton a chance, but it comes to nothing. United then break forward, Fernandes finds Ronaldo, who cuts in from the right and lets fly… but it’s a tame effort that Pickford saves easily.
36 mins: Fernandes has the ball in the net… but the offside flag is up. Ronaldo had strayed beyond the last man in the build-up. Everton are still living dangerously: if Ronaldo had left that pass from Rashford for its intended target, Fernandes, the United No.8 would have been clean through.
27 mins: An early change for United as Cristiano Ronaldo comes on for Martial, who walks slowly from the pitch and has headed straight down the tunnel. That’s a real shame for a player who was red hot in preseason only to get injured in August.
21 mins: Chance for Martial! Fernandes beats the offside trap and squares the ball towards the penalty spot. Martial and Antony seem to get in each other’s way before the former spins into space only for Pickford to close down the angle and block his attempt. Everton are under pressure here.
19 mins: Good save, Pickford! Gueye loses the ball again and Eriksen tries his luck left-footed from the edge of the box, but the Everton keeper parries well.
15 mins: GOAL FOR MANCHESTER UNITED! It’s Antony again! This time, it’s Gueye who loses the ball in the centre circle and the Red Devils pounce. Fernandes finds Martial, who plays a throughball into the path of Antony, and the Brazilian places a left-foot finish out of Pickford’s reach.

9 mins: United are seeking a quick response but Everton are defending well, with every challenge met by a huge cheer from the home fans. For the fourth time in five games in all competitions, Ten Hag’s men have conceded first.
5 mins: GOAL FOR EVERTON! What a strike from Alex Iwobi! Casemiro is dispossessed by Onana in his own half and Gray breaks towards the box. He lays is off to Iwobi, who takes a touch and curls a lovely finish out of the reach of De Gea. What a start for Everton!

3 mins: An early chance on the break for Everton, but Gordon’s cross is way, way too deep. There’s then a chance for Rashford to make some headway in the Toffees’ box, but he’s shepherded away by Conor Coady.
KO: It’s go at Goodison Park!
5 mins to KO: We’re almost ready for the off. Can this game match the excitement of Arsenal vs. Liverpool? Let’s hope so…
20 mins to KO: Ten Hag said his players had lacked belief in their thrashing by Man City, and Goodison Park perhaps isn’t the best place for them to start rebuilding confidence: the Red Devils have only won three times here in their most recent 10 league visits. They have also been 4-0 down at halftime in two away league matches this season alone. They lost 3-0 here in 2015, and 4-0 in April 2019.

35 mins to KO: Ten Hag’s changes are of little surprise: Malacia has been substituted at halftime in each of United’s previous two games, while Martial and Rashford came off the bench to rescue a win at Omonia in the Europa League on Thursday. The bigger question is what sort of impact Casemiro will have at the heart of midfield, and whether Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes can recapture some form.
TEAM NEWS:
United have made four changes from the starting XI against Man City: Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro and Anthony Martial are in for Tyrell Malacia, Raphael Varane, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho. Cristiano Ronaldo is on the bench again.

100 mins to KO: United were destroyed by Manchester City in the derby last weekend but managed to score three goals of their own at the Etihad Stadium, something no visiting team has done in the top flight since February. They will need a little attacking sparkle today against Frank Lampard’s Everton, who have only conceded seven goals in 2022/23, the best record of anyone in the division.
120 mins to KO: Manchester United are back in the UK and back in Premier League action against an Everton side who have, somehow, become one of the best defensive units in the business.
Everton vs. Manchester United lineups
In a huge boost for Everton, striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin could make his first appearance of the season on Sunday having recovered from a knee injury. He starts the game on the bench.
Defenders Yerry Mina (ankle) and Mason Holgate (knee) are still out, as are Nathan Patterson (ankle), Ben Godfrey (leg fracture) and Andros Townsend (knee). Anthony Gordon was recalled in place of Dwight McNeil, while former United midfielder James Garner is a substitute.
Everton lineup (4-3-3): Pickford (GK) — Coleman, Coady, Tarkowski, Mykolenko — Onana, Gueye, Iwobi — Gray, Maupay, Gordon
Everton subs: Calvert-Lewin, Ruben Vinagre, John, Begovic, Garner, Rondon, McNeil, Keane, Davies
Raphael Varane was only passed fit enough for the bench for United, where he joins Cristiano Ronaldo. Erik ten Hag has made four changes from the starting XI that faced Man City: Luke Shaw, Victor Lindelof, Casemiro and Anthony Martial are in for Tyrell Malacia, Varane, Scott McTominay and Jadon Sancho, who is not even on the bench.
Manchester United lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Dalot, Lindelof, Martinez, Shaw — Casemiro, Eriksen — Antony, Fernandes, Rashford — Martial
Manchester United subs: Sancho, Ronaldo, Malacia, Heaton, Elanga, Pellistri, Varane, Fred, McTominay

Everton vs. Manchester United betting odds
United are favourites for the victory here but not by a significant degree. After all, Lampard has made Everton tough to beat in recent weeks, and Calvert-Lewin’s possible return will be a huge boost to a relatively goal-shy attack.
Given United are returning from European exploits and have looked shaky in defence in the past week, backing a score draw may not be a bad idea.
