Former Lakers center attempting NBA comeback despite declining at age 31

The NBA is as ruthless as it gets.

Players can start their careers positively before finding themselves out of a job following several unconvincing seasons.

A declining former Los Angeles Lakers center is currently out of the NBA at age 31 but hopes to make a comeback to the most talented league basketball has to offer.

“NBA is something that I would definitely love to go back to,” Montrezl Harrell told Scoop B’s Brandin Robinson in a recent interview.

“At the end of the day, where I’m at in my life you gotta understand that I’ve had a great career and the way that the game looks at it when it comes to the NBA game, once you have an injury they start to write you off.”

After spending three seasons with the Los Angeles Clippers and improving his scoring each year, the Louisville product signed with the Lakers in 2020.

Although Harrell, a 13.5 points and 6.2 rebounds per game contributor, was solid during his lone season with the Lakers, the organization felt compelled to trade the former second-round pick to the Washington Wizards in August of 2021.

Harrell only appeared in 45 games with Washington before getting traded to the Charlotte Hornets. Once the 2021-22 season concluded, the Tarboro, North Carolina native signed a two-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers.

However, Harrell, who was once a dynamic face-up threat who could also excel in pick-and-roll situations, contributed only 5.6 points and 2.8 rebounds with Philadelphia in 57 regular-season games.

Unfortunately, Harrell suffered a torn ACL before the start of the 2023-24 season, which caused him to miss the entire year and ultimately led to the 76ers waiving him.

Harrell has since enjoyed stints with the Adelaide 76ers (Australia), Xinyang Flying Tigers (China), and Gigantes de Carolina (Puerto Rico).

Still, the NBA journeyman believes there’s a spot for him in the big leagues. Perhaps Harrell will ink a one-year NBA deal this summer and prove he can be a beneficial asset for a rebuilding or contending franchise.
