The French Open continues to deliver drama and stirring storylines as the tournament reaches an exciting climax.

The Sporting News wraps up the key results from Day 11.

Cilic joins exclusive list with epic quarter-final win

Marin Cilic booked his place in the French Open semi-finals for the first time in his career with a gruelling 5-7 6-3 6-4 3-6 7-6 (10-2) win against Andrey Rublev.

The Croatian’s impressive run at Roland-Garros makes him only the fifth current active men’s player to reach the semi-finals of all four Grand Slam events.

Cilic joins an exclusive list of stars that includes Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray to have achieved the feat.

The 33-year-old beat second-seed Daniil Medvedev in the fourth round and hasn’t made it so far at a Grand Slam since the Australian Open in 2018.

Cilic won the US Open in 2014 and has previously lost finals at both Wimbledon and the Australian Open.

Swiatek sweep continues as she knocks out key rival

Women’s world number one Iga Swiatek passed her biggest test to date at the French Open with flying colours.

The Polish star rolled past 11th-seed Jessica Pegula 6-3 6-2 to book a semi-final clash against Daria Kasatkina.

Swiatek has further strengthened her chances of lifting the French Open after the win with 18th-seed Coco Gauff now the next highest-ranked player remaining.

After winning at Roland-Garros in 2020, Swiatek believes she’s playing with less pressure having already proven herself in recent years.

“I kind of felt like the sky’s the limit for me, so I feel more free right now, I feel like I’ve proven myself,” Swiatek said post-match.

“A lot has changed in my mind and for sure I also realise that I can actually be No. 1 and really cope with it properly. So that’s pretty cool.”

Rune’s incredible run ended by Ruud

Holger Rune’s French Open fairytale came to an end in the quarter-finals against Casper Ruud, who triumphed 6-1 4-6 7-6 (7-2) 6-3..

Rune, who only turned 19 in April, beat Denis Shapovalov and fourth-seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at Roland-Garros this year as he highlighted his potential.

Prior to his French Open run, the Dane had been knocked out in the first round of his two prior Grand Slam appearances.

Rune was ranked as high as number one on the junior circuit, winning the French Open boys’ title in 2019, and is clearly ready step up at senior level.
