French Open results: Medvedev and Swiatek cruise, wildcard stuns and a racquet ends up in the stands

Another day of French Open action has brought with it some impressive performances, another stunning upset and a racquet somehow ending up in the stands.

The Sporting News wraps up the best of the action from Day 5.

Medvedev and Swiatek cruise into the third round

Roland-Garros has so far seen a number of top seeds stumble but neither Daniil Medvedev or Iga Swiatek look likely of an early exit.

World number one Swiatek is the undisputed favourite in the women’s singles and cruised to a 6-0 6-2 win over Alison Riske on Thursday.

The 20-year-old has now just dropped four games from her first two matches and is yet to lose since February.

Men’s second seed Medvedev arrived at the French Open after a recent stint on the sidelines with injury but he has quickly shaken off any cobwebs.

He swept past Lasio Dore 6-3 6-4 6-3 in the second round having also won his opening match in straight sets.

The 26-year-old will now face a sterner test in 28th-seed Miomir Kecmanovic as he looks to maintain his smooth return from injury.

Wildcard Jeanjean continues stunning run

Leolia Jeanjean was simply happy to make the French Open after receiving a wildcard into the tournament but she’s made the most of her first Grand Slam event.

The world number 227 stunned eighth-seed Karolina Pliskova on Thursday as she claimed a dominant 6-2 6-2 win.

With the French crowd on her side, Jeanjean continues to surprise herself on court.

“This match was full of emotions through and through. I managed to unroll my tactics to make her move back and forth, to put spin on my ball,” she said post-match.

“I didn’t know it would happen this way, once again. It’s incredible thinking that I actually won in two sets against a Top 10 player, a previous No.1 worldwide. It’s incredible.”

Begu ’embarrassed’ after racquet ends up in the stands

Jeanjean will face Irina-Camelia Begu in the third round with the Romanian turning heads for the wrong reasons during her second round win.

Begu went down a break in the deciding set and threw her racquet down in anger. It took a nasty bounce and ended up amongst the crowd with a nearby child startled but no-one injured.

The 31-year-old was given a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and managed to find her cool to win the match 6-7 (7-3) 6-3 6-4.

Begu was lucky to remain in the match with players in the past sent packing for less but she was quick to apologise for a rare act of frustration.

β€œIt’s an embarrassing moment for me, so I don’t want to talk too much about it,” Begu said post-match.

“I just want to apologise. My whole career I didn’t do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry.”
