Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy is on the hot seat heading into the team’s Thursday night matchup against the Giants. Working on an expiring contract, McCarthy is looking to beat Dallas’ division rivals at MetLife and reach an even 2-2 on the season — the same way the Cowboys started last year when they ultimately went 12-5 and lost to Green Bay in the wild-card round.
Fortunately for the veteran coach, recent history points in Dallas’ favor. The Cowboys have won all but one of their past 14 meetings with their NFC East counterpart, including the past six. McCarthy’s only loss to New York came in the 2020 finale at the end of his first season in Texas.
After winning their first matchup in Cleveland 33-17, the Cowboys returned home and lost two straight to the Saints and Ravens. Sunday’s matchup against Baltimore came down to the final minutes after Prescott facilitated a trio of fourth quarter scoring drives to narrow a 16-point deficit to just three. However, only scoring two field goals in the first half prevented Dallas from completing the comeback in the end.
SN’s NFL HQ: Live NFL scores | Updated NFL standings | Full NFL schedule
Quarterback Dak Prescott had an impressive passing performance despite the result, throwing for 379 yards and two touchdowns on 28 completions in the 28-25 loss. On the defensive end, Eric Kendricks starred with 12 total tackles, five more than the Cowboys player with the second-most in the game.
The Giants enter Thursday’s game with a 1-2 record, as well, but they are coming off their first win in Week 3. After losing at home to Minnesota and the Commanders in Washington, New York also found victory in Cleveland, beating the Browns 21-15.
In his best performance this season by far, quarterback Daniel Jones threw 24 completions for 236 yards and two touchdowns, both of which went to Malik Nabers. The rookie receiver out of LSU has impressed so far on New York’s offense, catching 8-of-12 targets against the Browns for 78 yards following an even stronger performance in Washington where he caught his first score.
Whereas the Cowboys were held without a touchdown in the first three quarters of their most recent game, the Giants scored every point in their win over Cleveland before halftime and failed to punch anything in the rest of the contest. Upon the end of Thursday’s matchup, one of the two teams will find itself at .500 and the other will drop to 1-3. For McCarthy’s sake, Dallas better end up as the former or the coach’s job could be in question.
