Heisman Trophy odds: Bo Nix may slip behind Jayden Daniels after Pac-12 championship game

By | December 1, 2023

The Heisman Trophy race underwent some potentially major changes on Friday night during Washington’s 34-31 win over Oregon in the Pac-12 championship game.

Quarterbacks Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. had a chance to make one final impression before Heisman voters are required to turn in their ballots on Monday.

Nix was favored over LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels prior to the game, but he struggled early and the Ducks came up short. Penix was third in the Heisman odds prior to Friday night and may have picked up some votes with another clutch performance against Oregon.

Here’s a look into both players’ performances and where they could stand at this point.

Bo Nix stats in Pac-12 championship

Nix finished the game 21-of-34 passing for 239 yards with 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. He also had 6 rushing attempts for 69 yards with an average of 11.5 yards per rush as the team’s leading rusher. It was his second-lowest passing yardage total on the season and lowest completion percentage.

Still, Nix leaves his imprint upon the Oregon QB legacy and should translate quite well to the NFL in just about every facet. His team was just outpaced on Friday.

Michael Penix Jr. stats in Pac-12 championship

Penix came out on the right side of the win column once again in this one, though it did not come without some mistakes on his end, including one sore interception. Penix finished out the championship matchup 27-of-39 passing for 319 yards with 1 touchdown and 1 interception.

Penix had some uncharacteristic misfires in this critical matchup, but he sealed the game with a clutch third-down conversion in the final two minutes. A reunion with Kalen DeBoer did what it as supposed to do, and a healthy Penix heading to the NFL could bring good news to a team at the next level.

Heisman Trophy odds

It will be interesting to see if Daniels jumps ahead of Nix after this weekend. Nix finishes the season with more passing yards but far fewer rushing yards than Daniels. They both threw 40 touchdown passes and Nix had the superior completion percentage. The Heisman will be awarded on Saturday, Dec. 10.
