Monday night is a bad night to be a baseball.
The Home Run Derby is taking over Texas, but it’s a current New Yorker who is looking to make some history. Mets slugger Pete Alonso, with two wins already under his belt, will make another run at a record-tying third Home Run Derby crown as he aims to fend off some of the league’s brightest young stars.
Gunnar Henderson and Bobby Witt Jr. are both first-time All-Stars and first-time derby participants, but they figure to be back on this stage many times in the years ahead. Witt was born in the Dallas area, and his father spent more than a decade with the Rangers. Could the Royals star take the derby by storm in his homecoming?
Veteran bats will be well represented, too, as Marcell Ozuna and Jose Ramirez each take more than 200 career home runs into the derby. Dodgers outfielder Teoscar Hernandez is closing in on 200 as well and enters his first Home Run Derby as an underdog.

The ultimate underdog is Phillies All-Star Alec Bohm, who’s had a tremendous season and leads the league in doubles but has the fewest home runs of anyone in the derby.
Rangers fans will have a hometown favorite in the field, as postseason hero Adolis Garcia is participating for the second consecutive year. Garcia has endured a disappointing season and didn’t make the All-Star roster, but he showed in October what can happen when he catches fire.
