NFL head coaches are trending younger. In an offseason that saw 72-year-old Pete Carroll and 71-year-old Bill Belichick ousted from their respective teams, a slew of younger head coaches entered the fray. Half of the league’s eight vacancies were filled by coaches 42 or younger, and only two were filled by coaches 50 or older.
Chiefs coach Andy Reid might be part of a dying breed, but it’s fair to guess his time in Kansas City will end when he wants it to — and no sooner. Reid continues to win big with the Chiefs, racking up Lombardi Trophies while most of the NFL jockeys to find a coach even half as successful as the future Hall of Famer.
Reid has a chance to add a third trophy to his collection in Las Vegas when the Chiefs face the 49ers in hopes of becoming the NFL’s first back-to-back Super Bowl winner in 19 years.
Here’s what you need to know about Reid’s age and where he already ranks among the oldest Super Bowl-winning coaches.

How old is Andy Reid?
Reid is 65, and he’s set to turn 66 in March.
With Carroll and Belichick shut out of the latest coaching cycle, Reid is now the NFL’s oldest active head coach. He’s also the third-longest tenured coach in the league, patrolling Kansas City’s sidelines for 11 seasons. Only Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin (17 seasons) and Baltimore’s John Harbaugh (16) have been with their current teams for longer.
It took Reid quite a while to finally climb the mountain and win a Super Bowl, but he’s quickly transitioned from hunter to the hunted. All 31 teams would like to find the sustained success the Chiefs have enjoyed in recent years, and it’s hard to imagine Reid stopping now even as he gets older.
While retirement speculation has occasionally surfaced over the past year, Reid told Arrowhead Report before the playoffs that he hasn’t considered leaving the Chiefs.
“I haven’t even thought about that. … I figured that would come up when you guys were asking these questions because I’m old — but not that old,” Reid said.
While he might be getting up there in years, he’s correct that he’s certainly not too old. Here’s a list of the oldest coaches to win a Super Bowl entering Sunday’s game.

A Super Bowl 58 win over the 49ers would make Reid the third-oldest coach to win a Super Bowl, as he is more than five months older than Coughlin was when the Giants won Super Bowl 46.
