Hurricane Helene cancellation updates: Latest news on MLB, college football and more games impacted by storm

By | September 25, 2024

The hurricane season runs from the beginning of June through the end of November. Typically, teams in the southeast are prepared for any severe weather heading their way, and their governing leagues figure out how to make it work. Whether the solution is rescheduled games or teams having to play at neutral sites, there is usually a way to get the games in.

MLB and the NCAA are diligently eyeing Hurricane Helene. The storm is taking a unique path and looks like it will make its U.S. landfall in the western panhandle of Florida, continue north through west Georgia/east Alabama and then turn westward toward Tennessee and Kentucky by Friday night and Saturday morning.

Helene was upgraded to a hurricane Wednesday. It is expected to strengthen rapidly and could be a Category 3 hurricane by the time it makes landfall. The Sporting News will provide the latest updates for the sports and teams affected by the storm, as well as the latest tracker for Hurricane Helene.

MLB

Mets vs. Braves

MLB has not officially taken action for an important NL East series between the New York Mets and the Atlanta Braves. Both teams are in the NL Wild Card race, and rain is projected for Atlanta all of Wednesday night and Thursday.

The league could have its hands tied, as both teams have a separate weekend series to end the regular season. These playoff-hopeful teams could be playing a very important doubleheader Monday, Sept. 30, with the Wild Card Series beginning the next day on Tuesday.

If the rain lingers into the weekend, it could impact Atlanta’s series against the Kansas City Royals, who are in their own playoff race in the AL Wild Card.

College Football

The game between Florida A&M and Alabama A&M has been postponed to Nov. 29.
