Inter Miami star hopes to play with Lionel Messi for ‘many years to come’ amid Argentine icon’s exit rumors

By | June 2, 2025

Lionel Messi has scored a brace in two consecutive Major League Soccer matches for Inter Miami now.

While Inter Miami have returned to their winning ways with two back-to-back victories in the league, rumors about Messi’s uncertain future at the Herons continue to surface, with the Argentine icon’s current contract expiring at the end of this year.

Even though club officials have assured fans that Messi will be signing a contract extension with Inter Miami soon, no new contract has been in sight so far.

Doubts over the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner’s future at the Herons got worse with his response when an MLS reporter asked about his plans at the club after Inter Miami’s loss against Orlando City on May 18.

Amid this situation, Messi has been linked with several clubs, including reports suggesting serious interest from Saudi Pro League sides.

Now, one of Messi’s club teammates, Jordi Alba, has expressed hopes of playing with the 37-year-old for ‘many years to come.’

What did Jordi Alba say about Lionel Messi?

Alba and Messi have shared the pitch alongside each other at Barcelona in 2012, and then, were again reunited at Inter Miami in 2023. Speaking about playing with the star forward, the Spanish defender told FIFA’s official website that it’s been ‘a privilege to line up alongside the greatest player of all time.’

“We’ve been sharing a dressing room for many years now. We were apart for two years, but then the opportunity came along to link up again here. All it takes is a glance for us to know what the other is thinking. We’re lucky enough to have combined to score many goals. It’s very easy to forge that bond, and I consider it a privilege to line up alongside the greatest player of all time,” he said.

“I’ve always said that Leo improves any team he’s in, and he’s made me a better player. I’ve been on the receiving end of a fair few of his assists, and I also have him to thank for being able to clock up so many assists. After all, every player is keen to boost their stats. I hope we can keep playing together for many years to come,” added Alba.

Alba and Messi have made 42 joint goal participation in 393 matches. It remains to be seen how many more the duo are able to add to the list in the future.
