Rich Eisen went on a rant on his own show about the ‘Tush Push’ and rightfully so.
*Just my opinion, I, too, am done with watching the ‘Tush Push’ play.
Rich said in his rant that “the league can’t get the officiating of it right.”
Every word he said in his rant is completely accurate. Jalen Hurts fumbled that ball even though it wasn’t called that way.
That got me thinking, is the NFL’s third-eye official really helping make the correct call for games?
Over the last few weeks of football, there has been a lot of disgruntled talk about the Eagles and the officiating that has come about in their games. Including Nick Wright, who bashed the NFL officiating.
If the play can’t be officiated, then why have the play? That calls for a ban, and that would help make it a fairer game for everyone.
But I have two ideas that would allow the play to stick around for those that enjoy that sort of rough and tough play, and allow the NFL’s new camera that is supposed to help officiate, actually help, because right now it doesn’t seem to be helping.
Now, understand this first idea is what I call a “tough rule.”
Get rid of the forward progress rule. Where that player falls with the ball is where it’s marked when the play is done. The whistle is blown when the ball carrier is on the ground or action calls for a stop in action.
During any offensive play, other players, including the quarterback, can push in football what is called “the pile” forward to gain yards. People highly applaud linemen when they can pancake their defender and move on to the next level.
But also vice versa, multiple defenders can tackle one ball carrier. This leads me into my next idea:
There is only one rule in the NFL that prevents defenders from piling up on one side of a field goal attempt. There is no rule about doing this during a defensive play.
Besides, maybe getting caught on a potential trick play, why not just seemingly destroy the Philadelphia Eagles’ centers every time they think to call that play? Eventually, he won’t want to do that anymore.
Could you imagine someone like Jared Verse pushing Poona Ford and Byron Young pushing Kobie Turner into a tag team hit on the center? That would be destructive.
Now counterproductively, that would hurt the NFL’s goal to make player safety a priority. But at the same time, this is a tough sport, and sometimes there are just tough football plays.
Either way, something needs to be done about this play. Everyone is sick of it, and you’re only going to see more outbursts about this play come about.
