Jelani Woods injury update: Latest news on Colts tight end’s toe

By | August 20, 2024

Things are not getting better for Indianapolis Colts tight end Jelani Woods.

Once a popular breakout candidate just months ago now faces a cloudy future with the team that selected him in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft.

As questions surfaced regarding his roster spot and fit within Shane Steichen’s offense, Woods picked up a toe injury during the second preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Though the Colts thought initially the injury wasn’t a serious one, the perception has shifted.

Steichen told reporters following Tuesday’s joint practice with the Cincinnati Bengals that Woods “will be out for a while” due to the injury.

This is a huge blow to Woods’ stock. This very likely means he could start the season on the PUP list, which is brutal news, considering he missed the entire 2023 season due to nagging hamstring injuries.

It’s unclear what went wrong along the way for the historically athletic tight end. He flashed immense promise during his rookie season, but he’s failed to take advantage of his opportunities when healthy.

Woods missing time almost guarantees a roster spot for second-year tight end Will Mallory, who was competing with Woods for the No. 4 spot in the room.

It will be interesting to see how the Colts go about Woods’ future with the team because it is not looking good for the former Day 2 pick.
