Kevon Looney has attempted 60 three-pointers in 523 career games for the Golden State Warriors. He has only made ten of them and has not hit one since 2021, but that is not stopping him from expanding that part of his game.
Now that Looney is entering his tenth season in the NBA, adding any sort of three-point shot to his repertoire can help his team tremendously and extend the big man’s time in the league.
“In years past, I would turn down five before I took one. Being more aggressive and shooting more threes. More threes for me is actually shooting one or two a game. So, I am going to start there and see how things go,” said Looney.
With Klay Thompson now in Dallas, the Warriors need to find new ways to space the floor. If Looney can be a threat from distance, everyone on the team will benefit, as defenses will have to adjust.
“Working out at UCLA, I shot a lot more threes, probably 400-500 every day. In the past, I would shoot some, but that wasn’t my focus,” said Looney. “I am not going to be out there hunting shots. I am not going to be like Klay or somebody, but when the time comes, just to be able to space the floor and make an open shot.”
During the Warriors’ dominant run, taking and making three-pointers has been the team’s identity. It is somewhat surprising that a player like Looney, who has played a role for the franchise for a long time, has not had the deep ball as a part of his game.
If Looney can shoot even 25 percent from three and knock one down every four games, it would be an added element to the offense that opposing teams would not be used to.
