FORT LAUDERDALE, Florida, Aug. 22 — The Florida high school football season is underway, and all eyes are on the Broward County National Football Showcase this weekend.
The No. 24 Corner Canyon Chargers of Draper, Utah, will get the Friday action started in a 4 p.m. kick against the unranked West Broward [Pembroke Pines, FL] Bobcats. Corner Canyon opened the 2025 season last weekend in Utah with a 45-0 win over the Bingham [South Jordan, UT] Miners.
Corner Canyon enters the game on a 12-game win streak as Utah’s defending UHSAA Class 5A champions. They’ll be meeting a West Broward team that advanced to the quarterfinals of Florida’s FHSAA Class 6A bracket.
Both teams have high expectations headed into the 2025 season, and the game will be a major bullet point on the winning team’s resume. Being an interstate matchup, the loser of the game won’t be any worse off when it comes to state playoff implications, but it could be an indicator of where the team stands as both squads prepare for the upcoming state schedules.
Check back in around the middle of the 3 p.m. EST hour as we start getting you up to date for today’s big season-opening clash!

KEYS TO THE GAME …
We want to pass along that the live stream has not started yet, and the radar over the last hour has looked a little rough. We’re trying to get confirmation on where things stand with the weather. Hang with us.
__________
TEAM INFO …
Let’s start with Corner Canyon. Utah isn’t Florida in terms of the sheer number of programs and prospects, but it is a strong high school football state. Annually, the Beehive State produces some extremely high-level talent at the prep level, and the best players here can play anywhere. The more casual Florida fans in attendance tonight might be surprised how this team looks when they take field. They’re going to look like a college team in many respects.
Case in point, the Chargers have six ranked recruits in the Class of 2026 leading the way. Big 4-star IOL Esun Tafa (6-4, 305 lbs.) is Utah’s fourth-ranked recruit, and he’s committed to USC. QB Helaman Casuga is also a 4-star, and he’s pledged to Texas A&M. He’s got 3-star WR Kai Meza (Minnesota) in the lineup as a target, and another 3-star wideout in Isaiah Morris who hasn’t announced his college destination yet. The defense has 3-star talent in DL Jase Kozlowski (6-5, 230 lbs.) and LB Mason Wood.
West Broward counters with two 3-star players on 247sports.com’s Florida rankings – CB Shmar Akande (Toledo) and OT Alejandro Schmitt (6-5.5, 300 lbs., Florida Atlantic).

WEATHER AND MORE …
Just checking in with a quick weather update. We had weather in the Miami area yesterday that was strong enough that it delayed the start of Columbus vs. Southridge. And ultimately that game was moved to Saturday morning.
The Weather Channel is reporting a strong thunderstorm moving through the north Miami area, and it could impact the area up until 4 p.m. – the scheduled start of this contest. We’ll keep an eye on that and pass along any updates, but the area is under a Special Weather Statement.
