The Oilers got off to quite the rocky start to the 2023-24 campaign. Edmonton began the season with just a 5-12-1 record, and the question on everyone’s mind was, what could be wrong with a team so loaded with talent?
The team has righted the ship, and done so in a big way. The Oilers have rattled off a historic winning streak, starting on Nov. 24, 2023, and vaulting Edmonton right back into the thick of the Pacific Division race.
This winning streak has not just put Edmonton back in the middle of a playoff race, it has put the team in the conversation for the longest winning streak in NHL history. There have only been 71 streaks reach double figures in length, but only six have made it up to 15 games in a row.

Where do the Oilers rank all-time? Here’s what you need to know.
Longest NHL winning streak
That record belongs to the 1992-93 Penguins, who from March 9, 1993, to April 10, 1993, won 17 straight games.
The Oilers’ win over the Predators on Saturday pushes their streak to 16 straight games. A win over the Golden Knights on Feb. 6 would tie the record. Beating Vegas and then the Ducks on April 9 would set a new record with 18 straight wins.
Edmonton tied the 2016-17 Blue Jackets for the second-longest winning streak in NHL history with 16 on Saturday. Here’s a look at all the NHL winning streaks that have reached 15 consecutive games.
Team | First win | Last win | Streak |
Penguins | March 9, 1993 | April 10, 1993 | 17 |
Oilers | Dec. 21, 2023 | Active | 16 |
Blue Jackets | Nov. 29, 2016 | Jan. 3, 2017 | 16 |
Penguins | March 2, 2013 | March 30, 2013 | 15 |
Sabres | April 8, 2006 | Oct. 26, 2006 | 15 |
Islanders | Jan. 21, 1982 | Feb. 20, 1982 | 15 |
Interestingly, only one team that has won 15 games in a row has gone on to win the Stanley Cup in the same season. That would be the 1982 Islanders, which went on to lose only four games in the Stanley Cup playoffs en route to winning a title.
The 1993 Penguins lost in the second round, the Blue Jackets lost in the first round, the 2017 Penguins were knocked out in the conference championship and the 2006 Sabres were also eliminated in the conference championship.
The Oilers will certainly be hoping they can keep the winning streak going — and end the year by joining the Islanders in that historic company.
