Man City vs Tottenham live score, updates, lineups and result from Premier League showdown

By | December 3, 2023

ETIHAD STADIUM, MANCHESTER — Premier League champions Manchester City and Tottenham are each looking to return to winning ways when they clash this weekend.

Pep Guardiola’s side have drawn their past two top-flight games, leading a crazy 4-4 draw at Chelsea three times before Trent Alexander-Arnold’s late equaliser pegged them back and last weekend’s showdown with title rivals Liverpool finished 1-1.

Spurs put themselves in the picture at the top of the table during the early weeks of the season thanks to an invigorating start to life under Ange Postecoglou.

However, injuries to key personnel such as James Maddison and Micky van de Ven have coincided with a run of three consecutive Premier League defeats to Chelsea, Wolves and Aston Villa.

The Sporting News is following the Manchester City vs. Tottenham match live, providing score updates, commentary and highlights as they happen.

Man City vs Tottenham live updates, highlights, and commentary

1 hr 20 mins prior to kickoff: Of course, undersoil heating and other modern facilities mean the playing area will be pristine today (hang on, as I type it appears to have started snowing…) — something of a relief for Ange Postecoglou. Not only does the Spurs manager love to play expansive, easy-on-the-eye football, but he can scarcely afford any more injuries to key players. After occupying top spot during the opening weeks of the Premier League season, Spurs have dropped to sixth on the back of three consecutive defeats.

This slump has coincided with injuries to James Maddison, Micky van de Ven, Pape Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur, while defender Cristian Romero will serve the final game of a three-match ban today. In terms of the spectacle, especially in light of City drawing their past two games, it’s a shame Spurs are not at full tilt. But, irrespective of who’s in the XI that will be confirmed 20 minutes from now, Postecoglou has shown he and his players will not die wondering.

1 hr 40 mins prior to kickoff: Temperatures have settled a balmy 2 degrees Celsius in Manchester, although those are set to dip as the sun sets before kickoff. Large sections of the Ashton Canal remained frozen on the walk up to the Etihad Stadium from Manchester this lunchtime. These are weather conditions that call to mind one of the most famous editions of this fixture, when the BBC’s Match of the Day cameras captured City’s 4-1 win over Spurs in 1967 on a Maine Road pitch under a blanket of snow.

The fact that Joe Mercer and Malcolm Allison’s team went on to win the Division One title in 1967/68 has only added to the legend of the so-called “Ballet on Ice”. It’s therefore somewhat fitting that City are facing Tottenham at home with temperatures close to zero on the week that a statue paying tribute to Francis Lee, Colin Bell, Mike Summerbee and their great side of the late 1960s and early 1970s was unveiled outside the stadium.

2 hours prior to kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester City vs. Tottenham from the Etihad Stadium.

Man City vs Tottenham lineups, team news

Guardiola is still without long-term absentee Kevin De Bruyne, but fellow midfielders Mateo Kovacic and Matheus Nunes could be included in the squad after stepping up their recovery from injury.

John Stones could be back but is likely to be on the bench as he builds fitness following his latest hamstring setback, with Jeremy Doku and Julian Alvarez due a recall after coming off the bench to inspire the midweek 3-2 Champions League win over RB Leipzig.

Man City projected lineup (3-2-4-1, right to left): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Dias, Gvardiol — Rodri, Akanji — Foden, Silva, Alvarez, Doku — Haaland.

Rodrigo Bentancur has joined the growing injury list at Tottenham after being forced off with an ankle problem in the 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last time out. James Maddison, Micky van de Ven and Richarlison remain amongst the players out, with Cristian Romero serving the final match of a ban. Emerson Royal was preferred at centre-back to Eric Dier last time out and may well keep his place.

Tottenham projected lineup (4-3-3, right to left): Vicario (GK) — Porro, Royal, Davies, Udogie — Lo Celso, Hojbjerg, Bissouma — Kulusevski, Son, Johnson.
