Man United vs Fulham live score, updates, highlights and lineups from FA Cup quarter final

OLD TRAFFORD, MANCHESTER — Manchester United look to continue their fight to win all available trophies this season as they host Fulham in the FA Cup quarterfinals.

Having won the Carabao Cup in February and reached the last eight of the Europa League, the Red Devils are bidding to secure a place in the FA Cup semifinals at Wembley in June. They could yet win an unprecedented quadruple of trophies, although their chances of lifting the Premier League title are slim at best.

Standing in their way at Old Trafford are a Fulham side enjoying a fine season under Marco Silva. In ninth place in the league table and only three points outside the top six, the Cottagers have found themselves in an unlikely quest for Europe.

League matches might usually take priority, but the chance to progress to the FA Cup semifinals is one they will be desperate to seize.

Man United vs Fulham live updates, highlights from FA Cup

21st min: United clear an Andreas Pereira free-kick but nobody seems to know who should chase the loose ball. Back it comes, and Harry Maguire is booked for wrestling Aleksandar Mitrovic to the floor. The free-kick routine doesn’t come off for the visitors, though.

16th min: Lisandro Martinez slide-tackles the ball out of play from a loose Marcel Sabitzer pass and immediately signals for United players to calm down. They’ve looked ragged early on, with Fulham much sharper.

13th min: Jadon Sancho cleverly delays a pass and then releases Marcus Rashford on the break. He finds Wout Weghorst, but the big striker’s shot with his weaker foot is tame and easily saved by Bernd Leno.

9th min: Man United have a spell of possession, but Fulham break, and Aleksandar Mitrovic sets up Willian to shoot wide. There’s a break in play after the Brazilian barged Bruno Fernandes to ground — that looked painful for the United star, who took an elbow to the ribs.

3rd min: Fulham have started brightly: a couple of crosses from the right have yielded corners through a Scott McTominay clearance and a David de Gea save.

1st min: We’re off and running! It’s not quite a full house here in the stands — even the Fulham section has empty seats — but there’s still a good atmosphere. “We want Glazers out” is heard from the Stretford End straight away.

5 mins before KO: The teams are out on the pitch here. They now know that victory today will see them face Brighton & Hove Albion at Wembley in the semifinals next month.

40 mins before KO: Usain Bolt is here to watch this match. There’s a joke to be made about needing a fast start out of the blocks, but I’ll save that for later — after all, this is a marathon, not a sprint.

1 hour before KO: Manchester United start with club captain Harry Maguire in defence alongside Lisandro Martinez. Raphael Varane is missing from the squad; Erik ten Hag told MUTV the defender has a “small injury” and should be back after the international break.

For Fulham, Joao Palhinha returns from suspension and Andreas Pereira starts against his old club.

1 hour 30 mins before KO: Man United have played 25 FA Cup quarterfinal matches at Old Trafford since the Second World War ended. One of those was against Fulham back in 2004, when Ruud van Nistelrooy scored twice to seal a come-from-behind win. United went on to win the trophy that year, beating Millwall in the final, as a teenager named Cristiano Ronaldo made his mark at Wembley Stadium.

1 hour 45 mins before KO: In the pre-match programme, Erik ten Hag writes: “There is no denying that we have had a very hectic schedule since the World Cup, so I have to recognise and respect the amount of hard work the entire squad has given during this period.” As if to underline the point, the United manager wrote these words in a brief moment of respite before Thursday’s 1-0 win over Real Betis in Spain.

Since the World Cup final on December 18, United have played 24 games in all competitions in the space of 88 days. That’s an average of a little over one match every three days.

2 hours before KO: Manchester United and Fulham play their final matches before the international break today. A place in the semifinals of the FA Cup is up for grabs.
