Manchester City vs. Manchester United live score, updates, highlights and lineups from Manchester derby

By | October 2, 2022

Erling Haaland will get his first taste of the Manchester derby when City and United meet for the 188th time in history on Sunday.

The Etihad Stadium clash is also Erik ten Hag’s maiden crosstown clash, with the Dutchman having masterminded an impressive recovery of four consecutive Premier League wins after United’s false start to the season.

That run includes wins over Liverpool and Arsenal at Old Trafford, meaning the Red Devils will approach City with more confidence than might have been expected back in August.

Pep Guardiola’s team won both derbies last season, triumphing 2-0 away from home before Kevin De Bruyne and Riyad Mahrez each bagged braces in a 4-1 home win in March.

The Sporting News is following the match live and providing live score updates and commentary.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: Here we go then. The big one in Manchester. City’s title defence has started without them completely hitting top gear but avoiding the sort of turbulence that has beset expected challengers Liverpool and Chelsea. Then there is Erling Haaland plundering goals all over the place and relishing his first taste of this fixture.

2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester City vs. Manchester United.

Man City vs. Man United predicted lineups

John Stones suffered a hamstring injury playing for England against Germany on Monday and misses out. Aymeric Laporte is closing in on a return following knee surgery but expect Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji to continue at the heart of the City defence.

Jack Grealish scored his first goal of the season and impressed during City’s previous 3-0 win at Wolves. He was suspended for England’s most recent game so at least he returns to club duty reasonably fresh.

Man City projected lineup (4-3-3): Ederson (GK) — Walker, Akanji, Dias, Cancelo — De Bruyne, Rodri, Silva — Foden, Haaland, Grealish.

Marcus Rashford netted twice in the Arsenal win before being withdrawn due to a hamstring injury. However, the England forward is back in training and, if he is available to start, that probably means only a place on the bench for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo will likely be joined among the substitutes by Luke Shaw after the left-back’s goalscoring outing for England. Harry Maguire (knee) is out.

Man United projected lineup (4-2-3-1): De Gea (GK) — Dalot, Varane, Martinez, Malacia — McTominay, Eriksen — Antony, Fernandes, Sancho — Rashford.
