Manchester United vs. Charlton live score, updates, highlights & lineups from Carabao Cup quarterfinal as Antony strikes

By | January 10, 2023

Antony scored his fifth goal of the season to give Manchester United a halftime lead against Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup quarterfinal at Old Trafford.

The Brazil winger also opened the scoring during the 2-1 FA Cup win over Everton at the weekend and he collected Fred’s pass to curl a wonderful strike beyond Ashley Maynard-Brewer to check an enterprising start from the League One side in the 21st minute.

United manager Erik ten Hag handed a first-team debut to 17-year-old midfielder Kobbie Mainoo but was forced into a change before the break when Diogo Dalot hobbled out of the action to be replaced by Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

Man United vs. Charlton live updates, highlights from Carabao Cup quarterfinal

77th minute: Fraser takes it but it’s a tame effort and Heaton easily gathers. That might be Charlton’s chance gone.

76th minute: Well, well. Fraser storms forward on a surging Charlton break, Malacia scythes through the back of him and Charlton have a freekick in a great position. That counter-attack came from Maynard-Brewer almost handling the ball outside his area.

73rd minute: Heaton hasn’t had much to do in the United goal tonight but he claims a left-wing cross from Sessegnon very well under pressure from Leaburn.

71st minute: Garnacho shows he can link play effectively too, finding an underlapping Eriksen. The Denmark playmaker fires across the six-yard box but there’s no one there to convert.

70th minute: Twenty minutes to play and Holden will be delighted that his side are still within touching distance. Remember, if this finishes level after 90 minutes we go straight to penalties. If Charlton find an equaliser it’s all up for grabs.

66th minute: Maynard-Brewer keeps Charlton in the tie with a wonderful save from Garnacho, who again cuts inside and causes a little mayhem.

61st minute: Holden goes to his bench and sends on O’Connell for Blackett-Taylor, who produced an eye-catching performance.

60th minute: Triple change for United with an hour played. Casemiro, Eriksen and Rashford are coming on for Mainoo, Fred and Antony. Ten Hag not messing about.

57th minute: Blackett-Taylor gets down the left and hangs up a cross to the far post towards Taylor, who is adjudged to have fouled Martinez.

55th minute: Antony lines up another one of his party pieces from a little further out. It’s wide on this occasion.

54th minute: Fred plays Mainoo into the box. The youngster tries an improvised backheel to Elanga but Charlton clear.

49th minute: Elanga has the ball in the net from Wan-Bissaka’s first-time cross but he’s pretty clearly offside. There’s no VAR in this competition until the semifinals and the referee’s assistant was absolutely fine being left to his own devices on that occasion.

46th minute: We’re back underway and Charlton fashion the first chance of the second half. Good work by Leaburn and Morgan works the ball to Fraser, who fires over from the edge of the box. The midfielder has scored in each of his past two outings and should really have done better there.

Halftime: Charlton spent all of stoppage time camped near or in their own penalty area. But they avoid any further damage. United lead 1-0 through Antony’s sublime opener but the Addicks are still in an absorbing cup tie. See you back here in a few.

45th minute: Wan-Bissaka getting roundly booed by the Charlton fans because he used to play for Crystal Palace. That’s beautifully petty. Great to hear. There’ll be three minutes of stoppage time.

43rd minute: Garnacho engineers a bit of space on the outside of Clare, who has really had his hands full with the United winger during this first half. The resulting shot flies over.

37th minute: Morgan whips it over the near side of the wall. It’s well-struck but that was always curling wide.

36th minute: Now a freekick in a good position for Charlton. Rak-Sakyi draws the foul from Mainoo. Can the League One side make this count?

35th minuteFred hits the post! What a brilliant freekick. Maynard Brewer was grasping at fresh air there. So unlucky for the Brazil midfielder.

33rd minute: Antony has a shot blocked and United continue the attack until Morgan fouls Fred about 30 yards from goal. Before the freekick is taken, Dalot needs some treatment. That’s going to be the end of is night. On comes Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

31st minute: More enterprising work from Blackett-Taylor but Dalot sticks to his task and United are awarded a goalkick despite Charlton protests.

30th minute: Blackett-Taylor looks to get something happening on a Charlton attack. He looks for Fraser but Martinez anticipates and boots out for a throw-in.

27th minute: Halftime is suddenly starting to look a long way away for Charlton. Garnacho gets further joy down the left but his cutback is to no one in particular due to McTominay not continuing his run.

24th minute: United look to press home their advantage and Antony attacks a ball to the far post. He classes heads with Sessegnon and both players will need a bit of treatment. Looks like they’ll be okay.

21st minuteGOOOOAAAAAALLL!!!! Antony!!!!

Do you really need me to describe it? The Brazil winger received the ball on the right-hand corner of the box, shifted it onto his lethal left foot and curled a lovely finish into the far corner. Trademark stuff fo this fifth of the season.

15th minute: Clare is down receiving treatment after being clobbered by Heaton at that corner. No malice in that from the veteran goalkeeper but it’s bizarre that the referee initially allowed play to continue. Charlton boss Dean Holden is not happy.

14th minute: Fun cup tie this. Back come Charlton. Blackett-Taylor goes inside and outside Dalot. His cross is cleared behind by Maguire and it’s a corner to Charlton. Dobson drills a shot straight at Heaton before United again break vibrantly.

12th minute: More joy for Fred here as he unleashes a thunderous shot that Innes bravely blocks. The hulking Charlton defender was knocked off his feet there. But he’s back up to successfully defend the corner.

10th minute: Fred runs beyond the Charlton defence. McTominay looks to pick him out but the pass is significantly overhit. There was a lot of pre-match rainfall and perhaps he was trying to account for that. Turn the power down, Scott.

9th minute: That ball out to the left from Maguire to Garnacho is becoming a big problem for Charlton. The Argentina youngster gets another shot away, this time slotting wide of the near post.

8th minute: More twinkled-toed magic from Garnacho, who cuts in from the left and tries his luck, blazing over with the angle against him.

7th minute: United are determined not to be cowed by any direct Charlton tactics. Maguire launches a high ball that Inniss fails to deal with under pressure from Antony.

5th minute: It’s a frenetic, open contest at the moment, with Charlton looking to attack whenever they can. The away fans are loving it but their team might be better served by settling this down a bit. United have the first corner of the night, it’s played to the edge of the box and then Malacia is offside.

2nd minute: The first clear chance falls United’s way as Garnacho causes havoc down the left. His cutback was behind Antony, who’d surely have done better than Dalot. The Portugal international blazed over left-footed from the edge of the box.

1st minute: Charlton look to start on the front foot, with Blackett-Taylor bursting into the box before United manage to clear.

3 mins from kickoff: Here come the teams, with the familiar strains of This is the One by the Stones Roses ringing around Old Trafford. What a moment for young Kobbie Mainoo.

20 mins from kickoff: No pressure then, young man…

40 mins from kickoff: Charlton boss Dean Holden is a long-time season ticket holder at Manchester United. His father and uncle were stewards at Old Trafford. As you’d expect, it promises to be a magical and emotional night for the former Bolton defender, who just told BBC Radio 5Live that family and friends have hit him up for 31 tickets to tonight’s match.

58 mins from kickoff: And this is what the Charlton XI looks like.

1hr from kickoff: The teams are in. Tom Heaton gets the nod over new recruit Jack Butland in goal for United, while Lisandro Martinez returns after his World Cup exploits and there’s a debut for Kobbie Mainoo.

1hr 10 mins from kickoff: Charlton are aiming for a truly historic triumph. The south Londoners last reached a major semifinal when they went on to win the FA Cup in 1947. More recently, during the first decade of this century, they were a fixture in the Premier League, but victories at Old Trafford proved elusive. They last won on United’s patch in 1986 and, prior to that, you have to go back to the 1930s to find examples of Addicks successes in front of the Stretford End.

1hr 20 mins from kickoff: United’s run in this competition means Erik ten Hag is closing in on a shot at silverware in his maiden season at Old Trafford. That’s not always been the best measure of managers in the post-Alex Ferguson era. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer famously fell repeatedly in semifinals before a marathon penalty shootout loss to Villarreal in the 2021 Europa League final, but his tenure was still judged more favourably overall than those of Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho, who picked up three pots between them.

Carabao Cup success is not the end game for a club of United’s stature but lifting the trophy would be a good way of solidifying the clear progress made under the Dutchman.

1hr 30 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to the Sporting News’ live coverage of Manchester United vs. Charlton Athletic in the quarterfinals of the Carabao Cup.

Man United vs. Charlton lineups

Playmaker Bruno Fernandes is suspended for United after being cautioned during their 2-0 round-of-16 victory over Burnley in December.

That has created an opening for highly-rated England youth international Kobbie Mainoo to make his senior debut.

Tom Heaton gets the nod over new signing Jack Butland as David de Gea reverts to the bench for cup action.

Anthony Elanga being deployed as a centre-forward Anthony Martial rests up does something to explain the eyebrow-raising pursuit of Wout Weghorst. If United need to call upon extra firepower, Marcus Rashford is among the substitutes.

Man United lineup (4-2-3-1): Heaton (GK) – Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Malacia – McTominay, Fred – ,  Antony, Mainoo, Garnacho – Elanga

Goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer returns for the visitors after missing the 2-1 win over Lincoln City in League One on Saturday because of concussion protocols — the only change made by boss Dean Holden.

Defender Eoghan O’Connell made his return from a knee injury in that game but full-back Mandela Egbo will misses out with a quad injury, although he has said he will travel to support his teammates from the stands.

Charlton lineup (4-5-1): Maynard-Brewer (GK) – Clare, Inniss, Ness, Sessegnon – Rak-Sakyi, Dobson, Fraser, Morgan, Blackett-Taylor – Leaburn
