Manchester United and Leeds United will not be renewing their rivalry in the Premier League in 2023/24, but the familiar opponents will be launching their preseason campaigns against each other when they meet in Oslo on Wednesday.
Erik ten Hag’s side last played when they lost the FA Cup final to Manchester City at Wembley Stadium on June 3, while Leeds return to action for the first time since their 4-1 home defeat to Tottenham Hotspur which relegated them from the top flight on May 28.
Ahead of their first Championship season since 2019/20, Leeds have made Daniel Farke their new manager — and the former Norwich City boss will oversee his first match in charge a week after being appointed.
Farke faces a potentially stiff test against a United squad including England midfielder Mason Mount, who joined for an initial fee of £55 million ($71.1m) from Chelsea on July 5.
Tom Heaton, Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jadon Sancho are among the other high-profile names in Ten Hag’s travelling party for a trip to the Norwegian capital, which is home to United’s largest overseas fan group.

Man United vs Leeds live updates, highlights from friendly
100 mins to KO: As well as drawing 2-2 with eventual UEFA Europa League winners Sevilla, Man United claimed two Premier League clean sheets in Lisandro Martinez’s last three games for the club before the defender missed the rest of the 2022/23 season with a metatarsal bone in his foot.
Martinez has travelled with the squad and could make his return today.
120 mins from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of the pre-season friendly match between Man United and Leeds!
A preseason game at the start of July might not come close to the intensity these teams have traditionally produced against each other, but there are some intriguing questions around this match: Will Mason Mount make his first appearance for United? Can Tom Heaton establish himself as a long-term replacement for David de Gea? And how will new Leeds manager Daniel Farke approach the tricky-looking task of achieving success with his new side in the Championship?
We should see some clues over the course of the 90 minutes or so coming up. Leeds begin their season at home to Cardiff City on August 6, while United kick off in the Premier League at home to Wolves eight days later.

Man United vs Leeds predicted lineups
Ten Hag will look to blend his established stars with emerging young talent during preseason, with the Dutch coach prepared to give academy players a chance to impress this summer.
United fans will be hopeful of seeing Mason Mount at some stage against Leeds, with the former Chelsea man included in the squad, and Tom Heaton is expected to start preseason as No.1 following the departure of long-serving David de Gea.
Man United projected lineup (4-2-3-1): Heaton (GK) — Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Martinez, Fernandez — McTominay, Mejbri — Amad, Fernandes, Sancho — Martial
Farke’s arrival has created confidence over Leeds being able to push for immediate Premier League promotion with minimal changes to the squad, as the German won two Championship titles during his time at Norwich.
The coach is expected to select a strong starting XI in this tie, with Liam Cooper, Luke Ayling and Tyler Adams all included in the squad.
