Manchester United vs Lyon result, live score, updates highlights and analysis as Van de Beek scores beauty for Ten Hag’s men

By | July 19, 2023

Manchester United and Lyon’s friendly at Murrayfield remained goalless at halftime.

Erik ten Hag’s side were looking to build on a 2-0 win over Leeds United in their first preseason outing and started brightly.

Antony forced a sharp save from Lyon goalkeeper Antony Lopes, while Amad had a pair of glorious chances fall his way inside the opening six minutes.

Lyon settled into the contest and had decent penalty claims waved away four minutes before the break when Amin Sarr went down under an untidy challenge from Alvaro Fernandez.

The Sporting News will be providing live updates and highlights from Manchester United vs. Lyon.

Man United vs Lyon live updates, highlights from Murrayfield friendly

62nd minute: Okay, Lyon about to make a looootttt of changes.

61st minute: Van de Beek, who really looks to be enjoying himself out there, seeks out the top corner but Lopes is equal to it.

55th minute: Lyon remain with the far more experienced XI out there but they’re being given the runaround by United’s youngsters. Gore, in particular, has impressed with a high-energy approach.

49th minuteGOOOOAAAAALLLLLL!!!!! Donny van de Beek!!!!

United lead and it’s an absolute beauty. Gore with a superb cross from the right, plenty of pace on it and Van de Beek lashes an unstoppable volley beyond Lopes.

46th minute: We’re back underway. Lyon haven’t made any changes. United have changed all of their outfield players. We’ll pop and updated lineup above for you in just a moment.

Halftime: Tolisso swings a free-kick in from the right, the ball loops up and Amin Sarr attempts an overhead kick. The end result is closer to causing the Lyon forward an injury than resulting in a goal. Goalless at the break.

41st minute: Penalty appeal for Lyon! Amin Sarr wriggles away from Martinez and is goalside of Alvaro Fernandez, who doesn’t look like he gets much of the ball. The youngster might have got away with one there.

37th minute: Mount duffs his freekick into the wall, the ball pinballs around and Lopes pounces on it.

36th minute: Jeffinho hesitates and wastes a good position on the edge of the United box, with Mount alert to intercept his prodded pass and launch a counter-attack. Antony finds the England midfielder and he’s brought down by a fairly nasty-looking challenge by Mata 22 yards from goal.

33rd minute: The highly rated El Arouch gets to swing a free-kick in from the left hand side. Martinez heads clear but United will have to defend a corner. El Arouch goes deep and it swings beyond the back post and out for a goalkick.

31st minute: Mata on the charge form right-back for Lyon. Varane gets he headed clearance in and the France defender makes another well-judged block moments later. He looks sharp.

30th minute: Coming up to the half hour. We’ve definitely settled into what might charitably be called “preseason fayre”.

21st minute: Lyon skipper Lacazette engineers some space to shoot on the edge of the box. Mainoo scampers back from midfield to make a last-ditch block and the resulting penalty appeals are particularly ambitious. Still, after Lyon’s haphazard start, this has turned into a more even contest.

16th minute: Lacazette is driven a touch wide by his compatriot Varane and fires across goal. Lyon keep the attack alive and Jeffinho smashes into the side netting.

12th minute: A cross is aimed towards the lurking Lacazette but Kovar gets down with some smart handling to claim.

11th minute: Sancho causing more havoc in the Lyon box, cuts back to Mount and Lyon scramble clear. It really does feel like a matter of time.

9th minute: Finally a chance for Lyon to get forward and Jeffinho stretches his legs before Martinez positively munches into a challenge. Some classic Argentina-on-Brazil activity there.

7th minute: Now United are in down the right, Sancho’s cross is cleared behind by Mamadou Sarr for a corner. The short set piece routine doesn’t amount to much.

6th minute: Amad on target this time from inside the box and Lopes has to push the ball away form his top corner. Some smart footwork and a measured low cross from Antony but that on a plate. Lyon’s defending, insofar as they were doing any, left a lot to be desired.

5th minute: Now Amad gets in and pull his shot wide from the left of goal. Lyon have very much ambled into this assignment in the Edinburgh sunshine and are being ruffled around by United’s high press.

3rd minute: Big early chance for United. Hannibal reads a poor clearance from Lyon goalkeeper Lopes. A nice touch and pass from Sancho gets Antony in but Lopes atones for his mistake with a sharp save.

1st minute: Nice early touch from United goalkeeper Kovar. Expect to see plenty more of that once Andre Onana arrives. Hannibal is lining up at centre-forward. Maybe he lost a game of rock/paper/scissors with Mount and Amad.

3 mins from kickoff: Here come the teams to the strains of United’s traditional walkout song of ‘This Is The One’ by the Stone Roses. Sunshine and a few pyrotechnics. It’s a lovely afternoon atmosphere all things considered.

15 mins from kickoff: There’s obviously no recognised centre-forward in the United line-up. The club website thinks Mount will operate as a false nine and we’ve tentatively stuck Amad in that role. It’ll all become clear soon enough but highlights just why Ten Hag is in the market for Atalanta striker Rasmus Hojlund.

40 mins from kickoff: Here’s the Lyon team. Corentin Tolisso and Alexandre Lacazette among those who will be looking to do some damage but former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren is absent with injury.

1 hour from kickoff: Here’s the United team. Ten Hag makes two changes from the XI that started against Leeds, with goalkeeper Matej Kovar and Antony replacing Tom Heaton and Omari Forson. No sign of Rashford, Casemiro or Bruno Fernandez in the squad, although the latter’s namesake Alvaro gets another runout.

1 hr 20 mins from kickoff: Team news will be with us shortly. The players available means Ten Hag could unfurl the midfield three that many expect to be his first choice in the battle for major trophies next season. If they play together at any stage in a match where substitutions will be plentiful, it’s going to be intriguing to see how Casemiro, Bruno Fernandes and recent arrival Mason Mount link up.

1 hr 40 mins from kickoff: Familiar faces were always going to be the order of the day for United fans here, with a handful of experienced internationals bolstering the squad that beat Leeds last week. But Jonny Evans, the United academy graduate who left Old Trafford in 2015? No one had that in the script.

However, the veteran Northern Ireland international has been training with United’s under-21s to stay fit while he assesses his options. Evans left relegated Leicester City when his contract expired last month. He has penned a short-term deal with United and will head to San Diego with the academy group after the Lyon match.

2 hours from kickoff: Hello and welcome to The Sporting News’ coverage of the pre-season friendly match between Man United and Lyon in Edinburgh.
