Mauricio Lara vs. Leigh Wood 2 undercard: Complete list of fights before main event in 2023 boxing match

By | May 24, 2023

Mauricio Lara will look to go 2-0 against Leigh Wood in enemy territory as he puts the WBA featherweight title on the line on May 27.

The bout, inside the AO Arena in Manchester, airs on DAZN.

Lara, 25, worked his way up the ladder after going 1-0-1 against Josh Warrington from 2021-2022. He beat Wood via TKO in round seven of their bout, knocking Wood down with a left hook that later forced the latter’s corner to throw in the towel.

Wood beat Xu Can for the WBA title and knocked out Michael Conlan in spectacular fashion in March 2022. The 34-year-old has waited a year to face Lara and hopes to reclaim gold in front of family and friends.

The winner of this fight could face Warrington, who believes rival Lara will get the job done again.

“I think it’s going to be the same outcome; I really do,” Warrington told Boxing News. “In Nottingham, I thought Leigh was in total control, but [there are] a few factors to take into consideration this time. He’s going straight into a rematch. He got cut, I don’t care how long he thinks he’s healed, that’s going to open up again. I don’t know how mentally strong he is, but he’s going to have them spooks. One punch and it ended it all, and I just feel like it’s going to be the same outcome.”

Outside of the rematch, the card sees the Matchroom debut of Jack Catterall, along with several title bouts. Here is a look into the entire main card of Lara vs. Wood 2.

Mauricio Lara vs. Leigh Wood 2 undercard

Jack Catterall vs. Darragh Foley

  • Division/Weight: Super Lightweight
  • Catterall record: 26-1
  • Foley record: 22-4-1
  • Belts at stake: N/A

Former super lightweight title contender Jack Catterall makes his Matchroom Boxing debut against Darragh Foley. Catterall (26-1) turned pro in 2012 and won the WBO European super lightweight title in 2014. In 2018, “El Gato” won the British super lightweight title.

The 29-year-old is coming off a controversial loss against Josh Taylor in February 2022 for the undisputed super lightweight belts. Catterall appeared to be the winner, but the judges scored the contest in favor of Taylor, to the dismay of many in the boxing world. A rematch never came to fruition, as Taylor backed out of planned bouts.

“I can’t put any more energy into Josh Taylor,” Catterall told Sky Sports. “I’ve lost all confidence in him now. Numerous times he’s pulled out the fight, and this time was the cherry on top, pulling out the fight and then, a week later, announcing negotiations with another fighter at 140 lbs. I don’t like the sound of it, so it’s time to focus on me. I’ve got a family to feed, and I want to go and win world titles… It’s time to move on from Josh.”
