Superman is back in the building.
Jimmie Johnson is one of the most decorated drivers in NASCAR history. The Hall of Famer racked up seven Cup Series championships, tied with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for most in series history. Five of those were won consecutively, an achievement that likely won’t be matched anytime soon.
Johnson easily could’ve sailed off into the sunset, content with his accolades and trophies. Yet, when the Cup Series rolls into Charlotte for the Coca-Cola 600, he’ll be there.

He won’t be in his legendary car, of course; Johnson now has the No. 84 scrawled on the side of his chariot as he drives part time for Legacy Motor Club. But as long as he’s on the track, he’s a threat. He has won four of these races, one away from Darrell Waltrip’s record.
MORE: Rain in Charlotte could move race to Monday
Will he get it done? Johnson ran well in his first Cup Series race of the season, climbing into the top 10 at the Daytona 500 before he was collected in a multi-car wreck. Perhaps luck will be on his side this time around.
If so, it could be a long race for his fresher-faced foes.
