Denny Hamlin comes to life when the NASCAR Cup Series rolls into Pocono Raceway.
The Joe Gibbs Racing star has nabbed six checkered flags there in his sparkling career, more than any other active driver. His dominance is scrawled along the track’s surface; Hamlin has put together some of the most dominant performances the Tricky Triangle has seen, undaunted by its harrowing corners and unusual shape.
That’s what made last year’s result so shocking. Chase Elliott ended the day in victory lane, taking advantage of a frantic final stage to secure his first Cup Series win at the track.
Yet all of the spotlight was on Hamlin and then-teammate Kyle Busch. The duo, who have combined for 10 wins at the track, were disqualified after being found to have used unapproved material on the front fascia of their cars.
The modification didn’t do much to help Hamlin, as he came to find out, but it certainly left a bad taste in his mouth. One year later, the outspoken racer has a chance to get his payback amid sumptuous hillside views.
