It’s championship season, with every fall collegiate sport ushering in its respective national tournaments. The NCAA field hockey tournament represents one of the sport’s pinnacles, aside from the Olympics and other international competitions.
Familiar faces highlight the 2024 bracket, with North Carolina, UConn and Northwestern occupying the top three seeds. Atlantic 10 champion Saint Joseph’s snagged the final national seed after earning the highest ranking in program history at No. 3 in the final National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll of the season.
The Tar Heels are looking to defend their title from last season under first-year coach and North Carolina alum Erin Matson. Arguably one of the best players in the history of the sport, Matson’s team won both the ACC and NCAA Championships in her debut campaign—the program’s 26th conference title and 11th national crown.
North Carolina will have to overcome a stacked field, including 2023 runner-up Northwestern in the No. 2 spot. Last year’s championship game was one for the ages, featuring a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation after two third-period goals. The contest went to double overtime before ending in a penalty shootout, where the Tar Heels prevailed.
Other members of the country’s premier field hockey conferences like Big Ten competitors Michigan and Maryland and powerhouses Syracuse, Duke, Virginia and Boston College among others, will also duke it out for the title.
