The New York Giants will spend this upcoming season evaluating the game’s most important position.
As they look to get back into the competitive field of the NFC landscape, the Giants likely will have an answer to the question of whether Daniel Jones is the future of the quarterback position in East Rutherford.
Should they look to move on from Jones after the 2024 season, there’s a chance they could target the star quarterback from a division rival next offseason.
Assuming Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys don’t come to an agreement on a new contract, the three-time Pro Bowl quarterback will hit the open market.
In listing the potential top landing spots for Prescott next offseason, Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk had the Giants holding the top spot.
“Their feelings about Daniel Jones became obvious during Hard Knocks. And Jones knows it. And it could become a self-fulfilling prophecy,” Florio wrote. “The Jones contract gives the Giants an escape hatch after this season. Wouldn’t it be great for the Giants to steal Dak from a division rival? It would be a nice bookend to the Eagles swiping running back Saquon Barkley from the Giants earlier this year.”
Upgrading to Prescott, who enters his age-31 season, would be an improvement over what the Giants have had since the prime of Eli Manning.
It would be an extremely expensive objective for the Giants, though, as Prescott is likely seeking at least $50 million annually on his next contract.
According to Over The Cap, the Giants are currently projected to have just over $30 million in salary-cap space during the 2025 offseason, but they can save $19.3 million if they part ways with Jones.
Prescott has been a strong option at quarterback during the regular season throughout his career, but he has struggled to win big games when the playoffs roll around.
Granted, even being in the conversation for the playoffs every year would be a change of pace for the Giants over the last decade.
It will be interesting to see what happens with Prescott and the Cowboys. Given the likelihood the Giants enter the quarterback market again next offseason, this will be something to watch.
