Manchester United look to fend off one of their top four challengers as they visit St. James’ Park to take on Newcastle in a Sunday Premier League tilt.

The Red Devils sit third in the Premier League table, but they are in a perilous position, as Newcastle are just three points behind. While Man United have two games in hand on most of the teams around them, they do not have such an advantage on the Magpies who have played the same number of matches.

Newcastle can actually leapfrog Man United in the table on goal differential with a win at home, however they’ll have to do so without leading scorer Miguel Almiron, who is sidelined for a number of weeks with an injury.

These two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the reverse fixture earlier this season, and they also met in the 2023 Carabao Cup final with Manchester United winning the first domestic trophy of the season with a 2-0 blanking of the Magpies.

Newcastle vs Man United: Second Half

90+1 min: There’s five minutes of stoppage time, and it doesn’t appear Manchester United have much to offer as this match winds down. The roof has come off St. James’ Park as the home fans explode.

88th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! The Magpies have won it! Luke Shaw concedes a needless and silly free-kick near the corner flag, and Callum Wilson heads home the delivery! It’s all too easy for Newcastle on the set-piece, and this one’s wrapped up!

85th min: There’s a slight touchline bust-up between the two managers, seemingly over how long it took Newcastle to restart play, which upset Erik ten Hag. Eddie Howe reminded him that United were doing the same thing in the first half.

84th min: Meanwhile, Man United are readying Fred, Facundo Pellistri, and Victor Lindelof all set to come on. Both central defenders, Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez, are withdrawn, as is Scott McTominay, so Erik Ten Hag is throwing bodies forward at the death here.

Newcastle goalscorer Joe Willock is struggling, seemingly having picked up a late injury, so he’s taken off for Elliott Anderson.

80th min: Callum Wilson enters for Alexander Isak, who was excellent today in the build-up for Newcastle.

77th min: There’s real concern for Fabian Schar who went down during that Newcastle chance and was holding his face. David de Gea immediately called for the game to be stopped, likely recalling the last time Schar went down with a head injury. He is up now and walking off, still looking dazed. It would be surprising for him to stay in the match given he’s had two instances of head injuries to this point. Player safety has to be the chief concern.

Incredibly, he’s allowed to re-enter the match. Not so sure about that.

76th min: Chance, Newcastle! ITS AGAINST THE BAR, AND THEN CLEARED OFF THE LINE! How have Newcastle not scored??? A huge chance to double the lead! David de Gea makes an unreal save off a Bruno Guimaraes up against the crossbar. Then Fabian Schar looked to follow it up and its cleared off the line.

72nd min: Manchester United have their best attacking move of the match, which includes an excellent switch of play from left to right and Jadon Sancho. He cuts to Marcel Sabitzer but while the midfielder has a big opening to hit it first-time, the ball gets stuck at his feet on the first touch, and the chance disappears, with his shot eventually being blocked.

68th min: Eddie Howe decides to stick with some of his substitutes now. Allan Saint-Maximin was exceptional, but comes off likely due to his recent injury history, while Jacob Murphy exits as well. Joelinton and Anthony Gordon are those who enter.

65th min: GOAL! NEWCASTLE! The Magpies have finally found their opener, and it’s Joel Willock, who had missed two huge chances in the first half!! A beautiful vertical ball from Jacob Murphy to Bruno Guimaraes is what unlocked the Man United defence, and while Guimaraes’s cross was too deep past the far post, Allan Saint-Maximin was there to head it back across goal, and Willock hammered it home from point-blank range.

Eddie Howe was about to change his entire front line, but now the substitutes have sat down! What a moment!

60th min: Manchester United are readying their first two substitutions, as Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial are set to enter, and it’s a wonder why Erik ten Hag didn’t bring this pair on at halftime. Wout Weghorst comes off, having contributed almost nothing all game. Antony also exits, which is surprising as the Brazilian was one of the only positive United attackers all game.

56th min: Manchester United finally have their first shot on target, but it’s weak from Antony as he looked for the curler, and Nick Pope collects easily.

54th min: Allan Saint-Maximin continues to cause problems down the Newcastle left, but Diogo Dalot this time does well to block the cross and then its headed out for a corner by Scott McTominay. The corner is taken short by Newcastle and doesn’t produce anything of note.

47th min: There is some serious concern at the ground as Fabian Schar fell to the ground after heading the ball. It was an unchallenged header, but the way Schar went to ground like a rag doll caused both sets of players to show immediate concern, and they call the physios are out immediately. Schar is conscious, but blinking his eyes rapidly, looking like he’s trying to get his senses back. Scary, that.

Schar is up and jogs off under his own power, but still looks dazed, shaking his head as he still tries to brush off the cobwebs. Hopefully he doesn’t come back onto the field unless the medical staff is sure he is well enough to continue.

Kickoff: The match is back under way with no changes to either side. It’s surprising that Erik ten Hag didn’t make any moves at the break given how battered Man United were in the first half.

HALFTIME: Newcastle 0-0 Man United

The first 45 minutes was entirely dominated by Newcastle, and yet they’ve not found a way through the Manchester United goal.

David de Gea made a wonderful double save, but otherwise it’s mostly been down to poor Newcastle finishing. The Magpies may come to regret their wastefulness in that first half if Erik ten Hag can make the appropriate changes. They need to do something to grab control of this match, otherwise there’s only one inevitable conclusion to this game.

43rd min: Another Newcastle shot from a great position, but this time a blast from Alexander Isak at the top of the penalty area crashes into Lisandro Martinez. The Argentine defender did well to keep his arms behind his back knowing what was coming, and while Newcastle players scream for handball, Stuart Atwell shakes his head, knowing Martinez did everything he could.

40th min: Chance, Newcastle! Joe Willock’s missed another huge chance! Alexander Isak springs a counter with great hold-up play, and Allan Saint-Maximin does well to craft the chance by charging forward on the ball and cutting laterally to Willock in acres of space. Yet the shot blazes over, when he really should have scored. Newcastle will be furious with themselves if they can’t take the lead before the halftime break.

37th min: Man United players are in Stuart Atwell’s ear to complain that they should have a penalty after Bruno Fernandes goes down under a challenge from Fabian Schar. It’s a soft coming together as Fernandes stepped across looking for the foul, and no call is the right call. Atwell does botch it somewhat though, as he gives a goal kick when it definitely should have been a United corner.

Down the other end Sean Longstaff sends a howitzer on goal from long distance but it goes just inches wide.

32nd min: Newcastle continue to control this match as they are the ones with all the attacking possession. They are frustrating Manchester United players up and down the pitch. David de Gea the latest to rage after he thought he was fouled on a corner but no whistle was blown.

26th min: There is a real venom to this game. Marcus Rashford, of all players, goes to ground under heavy pressure from Dan Burn and doesn’t draw a whistle. He holds his dislodged boot as proof of the contact, and when no call is made, he spikes it on the ground angrily. Erik ten Hag is incensed, having a go at the fourth official. Burn has now riled up two Man United players.

22nd min: Referee Stuart Atwell has to break up a slight scuffle between Antony and Dan Burn. Atwell eventually calls over Burn, the Newcastle captain, to have a discussion. Burn was unhappy Antony grabbed the ball on the ground looking for a foul, before getting up and putting a shoulder into the Newcastle defender’s chest.

There’s been a lot of fouling and physicality in this game. Atwell may get good use out of his cards as this match progresses.

19th min: Chance, Newcastle! A cross from Allan Saint-Maximin comes to Sean Longstaff on the penalty spot who flashes a powerful header inches wide! The flag goes up indicating it wouldn’t have counted, but again United are carved open.

16th min: Chance, Newcastle! DAVID DE GEA MAKES A SENSATIONAL DOUBLE SAVE! How have Newcastle not scored there?!?

First it’s Alexander Isak who heads on net, and De Gea parries it. It falls right into the bath of Joe Willock whose follow-up is blasted right at the Spaniard on the ground. Not sure De Gea knew much about that second one, Willock will be furious with himself, he could have put that anywhere!

15th min: Alexander Isak nearly had a go on goal, but the ball flashes just inches over his head as he leaps to meet the delivery on the doorstep of David de Gea’s goal. That’s another close chance for the hosts!

11th min: St. James’ Park is roaring as David de Gea takes ages to take a goal kick. Eddie Howe is up in arms as well, reflecting Newcastle’s frustration with how Manchester United are approaching this match. It’s all Newcastle right now, and the visitors seem rattled.

Scott McTominay steals the ball back and Wout Weghorst has a shot but it’s from a very tight angle and crashes into the side netting.

9th min: Manchester United are insisting on playing out through goalkeeper David de Gea, whose issues on the ball have been well publicised in recent years. Newcastle press high and nearly cause the Spaniard issues but he manages to finally relieve pressure after some very nervy moments.

8th min: Bruno Fernandes catches Alexander Isak right in the chest with his studs as they battle for a high bouncing, but gets away without anything other than a common foul. Some leniency from referee Stuart Atwell in the early going.

6th min: Chance, Newcastle! St. James’ Park is roaring as Sean Longstaff settles a header from Alexander Isak right at the top of the six-yard box. It’s a wonderful first touch to bring the ball down, but didn’t get the contact on the ensuing shot right as he swings his left foot at it. It’s exceptional play from Newcastle all up until the final hit, which is blocked. Good start for the home side!

4th min: Both teams are showing significant attacking intent in the first few minutes. Newcastle have an early corner but it’s cleared, while Marcus Rashford is dispossessed trying to split two defenders and penetrate the penalty area.

Kickoff: The match is under way at a rousing St. James’ Park! A huge battle in the Premier League top four race. Can Newcastle take a huge step towards a return to the Champions League? Or will Manchester United secure a tighter grip on their third position?

15 mins to kick: One really interesting battle to watch will be Allan Saint-Maximin against Diogo Dalot. The Newcastle winger got the best of his Red Devil defender in the EFL Cup final, as Dalot picked up a 10th minute yellow card and was substituted off at halftime.

United don’t have the cover to haul Dalot off this time with Wan-Bissaka sick (see below), so it’ll be up to the Portuguese international to hold his own this time around.

29 mins to kick: Erik ten Hag told MUTV that Aaron Wan-Bissaka misses out on the squad altogether today with an illness.

43 mins to kick: Scott McTominay has earned a big chance here for Manchester United, as Erik ten Hag goes with the hot hand over Fred in midfield. The Scottish international had a massive two games for his country over the past week, scoring four goals, including a brace in a monstrous win over Spain.

I’ve tipped him to keep having a go on frame in my betting preview of the match, because if the hot hand is good enough for Erik ten Hag, it’s good enough for us. Have a look at all the other picks for this game at St. James Park!

60 mins to kick: Team news is in, and the reports from earlier were correct about Manchester United. Marcus Rashford returns for Man United, and Scott McTominay starts in midfield, while Anthony Martial is on the bench.

For Newcastle, they have Allan St. Maximin back, which is big, while Joelinton is surprisingly on the bench as Eddie Howe names an unchanged side.

75 mins to kick: There are some Manchester United lineup leaks floating around out there. Anthony Martial is reportedly making his return to the squad on the bench, while others state that Antony will start on the wing, likely leaving Jadon Sancho outside the lineup. It seems Scott McTominay’s excellent international performances have earned him a place in midfield with Casemiro suspended, starting alongside Marcel Sabitzer, with Fred left on the outside.

88 mins to kick: Brendan Rodgers was sacked as Leicester City manager this morning, becoming the 11th manager fired in the Premier League this season. Half the managers to start the 2022/23 season with a Premier League club have now departed their posts.

Rodgers was reportedly a candidate for Manchester United not long before Erik ten Hag was hired. What a difference a few months make. The turnover in the English top flight this season has been astounding.

104 mins to kick: There’s a real feeling of importance ahead of this match, as the possible results create a world of different outcomes in the Premier League top four race. A Newcastle win would see them leap Manchester United into third in the table, whereas a Red Devils win would see Man United open up a four-point gap on anyone below them, still with a game in hand on most others around them. A big opportunity for both clubs in this race.

There is a boost as Allan Saint-Maximin has passed fit to start despite missing international duty with a knock.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope is back in goal after injury forced him to withdraw from England duty, but Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser miss out, with Almiron’s long-term injury a real worry for the Magpies.
