Months’ worth of research, scouting, interviews, evaluations, reports, rumors, speculation and more all came down to this. Round 1 of the 2021 NFL Draft is complete.
Just as everyone predicted, any uncertainty regarding the draft didn’t begin until the 49ers’ third overall pick: The Jaguars, owner of the first overall pick, and the Jets, No. 2 overall, selected quarterbacks Trevor Lawrence and Zach Wilson, respectively.
With those picks out of the way, San Francisco spurned Alabama’s Mac Jones and instead opted for North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance, making him the third straight quarterback selection of the draft. He was the third of seven straight offensive selections, a first in the modern NFL Draft era; South Carolina cornerback Jaycee Horn was the first defensive selection at No. 8 to the Panthers.

Other firsts from the 2021 draft include four receivers from the same conference (the SEC) taken among the top 32 picks, Moreover, two players from the same school headed to the same team for the first time (Clemson’s Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne, selected by the Jaguars with the first and 25th overall picks).
Alabama also tied Miami’s 2004 NFL Draft record with six first-round selections: Jaylen Waddle No. 6 to Miami; Patrick Surtain II No. 9 to Denver; DeVonta Smith No. 10 to Philadelphia; Jones No. 15 to New England; Alex Leatherwood No. 17 to Las Vegas; and Najee Harris No. 24 to Pittsburgh.
