Brazil’s Richarlison and France’s Andre-Pierre Gignac were locked in a battle atop the scoring chart of the 2021 men’s Olympic tournament. Gignac won’t be able to catch him after France was eliminated in the group stage.
Richarlison struck for a hat trick in Brazil’s opening match against Germany and added two more in the group-stage finale against Saudi Arabia to wrest the lead away from the Frenchman, who netted a penalty kick goal in the opener against Mexico and then bagged a hat trick of his own in his second match against South Africa. He couldn’t help France in a 4-0 tournament-ousting loss to Japan.
The two forwards were among the oddsmakers’ pre-tournament favorites to finish as the leading scorer in the competition. Lee Kangin (South Korea), Uijo Hwang (South Korea), Takefusa Kubo (Japan), Alexis Vega (Mexico) and Chris Wood (New Zealand) are still in with a chance to challenge Richarlison.
The table below is updated with the latest goal-scorer rankings after every matchday in the men’s football tournament. For players tied on goals, the first and second tiebreakers in the table are assists and minutes played. (Note: There have also been four own goals scored which are not reflected below.)
