For the first time since 2014, the Open Championship is being played at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in England. The tournament will conclude the 2023 major championship schedule.
The last winner of the Claret Jug at Royal Liverpool was Rory McIlroy, who doubtless will hope for a repeat performance while in Merseyside. It’s his only win at The Open, but it’s also his most recent major victory.
Perhaps that’s why McIlroy opened the week as the favorite to take it home again at +650, a price that no doubt will change following his dramatic win in the Scottish Open last weekend. Rounding out the top five in Open Championship odds are Scottie Scheffler (+900), Masters champion Jon Rahm (+1200), defending Open champion Cameron Smith (+1600) and PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka (+1800).
Apart from that group, one of the biggest storylines to watch is the uneasy truce between the PGA Tour and LIV Golf after the entities agreed to a joint venture. McIlroy has dismissed, vehemently, the possibility of captaining a LIV Golf team, so it’s clear there’s still tension between PGA Tour loyalists and LIV defectors.
